Baseball card collectors, how many of these do you own?

Remember when they were selling like hot cakes? It was in the early Ebay days so it was easy to sell cards. I had 3 of these, sold two of them for $150 each I think it was back then. I still have one in the old baseball card collection in the garage somewhere, if it didnt get eaten by mice. Whats this card worth nowadays?

dad I used to have a full sheet of these ( 9 ).

I was like 16 and needed some spending money, so I took them and some other cards to a dealer. I asked him to give me like $50 for everything I had and he said he wasn't buying anything newer than 1975.

Then it was like a year or 2 later when McGwire broke the record and I sold those 9 cards for something like $750 which was still cheap because at one point they were getting $200-$250 each.

I dont even follow cards anymore, what are they now, $1 each

the McGwire card isnt worth much unless its PSA 9 or PSA 10

Problem is the Card Companies flooded the market with cards. There were so many normal cards and "specialty cards" made the entire hobby went from "fun" to a "business" . I can remember card shops in the stripmalls and "autograph" shows were popping up all over the place and ham-n-egger sports personalities selling their autographs for $25 a pop. The greed of that fad really drove the entire enterprise into the toilet.

There is still value in mid-80's cards-----Jordan's rookie still commands a pretty good buck, and 70's NFL isn't a bad lot to have.

As Dirty pointed out----once the market got saturated and there were 9 different rookie cards per player-----the value dropped away.

Oversaturation of the market by the card companies and Ebay killed card values. When you got every jugghead willing to sell their card on Ebay for 30-40% of BV it crippled pricing. Anything from 1974-2000 is worth less now than it was 10-15years ago. All the coveted cards of my time like '84 Donruss Mattingly, '84 Fleer Update Clemens, '89 Upper Deck Griffey, '85 Topps McGwire are worth a fraction of what they were then, unless you have one with a 9.5 or higher

I sold a Bobby Orr Rockie card on ebay for 355$ in 2004 it's worth around $250 now BOOK VALUE. on ebay probably can get around $60-70

Absolutely none, those are pretty much worthless. I have nothing but Prewar. I am a "Type" card collector. I am really into D304, D359, 394, 390-1, E93 and E254 at this present time. I go in phases but I never go modern and always keep it Prewar.

Exactly right. It's the only thing there is still a good market for and is a sound investment.

you are correct. i owned a sports memorabilia business for 10 yrs and saw the demise of this business up close and personal. from the stupid and greedy card companies to the fake autographs which put the business right into the tank. low life's were passing off auto penned/facsimiles/rubber stamped and photocopies as the real deal. i was forced out of business not because of my business but because of the unscrupulous nature of this business and it's opportunists.

I have boxes and boxes of cards mostly from 1987-1992 that I collected heavily as a kid. Pretty sickening to see cards that were listed in price guides at $100+ 15 years ago, now selling for $5 on ebay.

Oversaturation destroyed the hobby. Happened about 15-18 years ago. The market had room for about 5-7 principal manufacturers of sportscards. It exploded into about 15+ and ruined EVERYTHING. Used to carve a really nice market selling them under a tent at drive-in swap meets. Had glass cases, grab bags, and business was brisk.

Almost all cards of significant value have plummeted. Card shops had to take up selling Magic and other Fantasy game cards or croak. Many did. Large cities that once had 20 shops now are lucky to have 5.

I have a little over 500 Ken Griffey jr cards myself hope to make some profit one day off these

I concentrated on '40's, '50's and early '60's cards.
I liked that era of baseball and it seemed that the
quality of each player was higher than the period following the '50's.
The fact that there were only eight teams in each league...(American
and National) makes each team very special.
Not sure on the value of my collection as I haven't
priced them in years. Can't be as low as my GE stock.

I used to have tons of cards but I sold most of them in high school so I could buy pot. Since the collectibles market crashed in the 1990's I'm sure I probably came out ahead.

Dad how many SBR points would it take to take that from you?

I'd have to search through my garage for probaby an hour just to find the boxes with cards/collectibles. Then I would have to sift through that to find the card. Thanks but no thanks.

I've got about 3,500 cards at last count dating to 1959. That total includes several hundred from the Conlon Collection back in the early 90s. Believe the most valuable card I have is the '65 Joe Morgan rookie Topps. That and the '64 Al Kaline Topps that illini gave me at the bash last year are probably my two favorites.

There are 16 different variations of Bonds rookie card. The values listed represent an un-graded card in mint condition, but expect the true selling value to be slightly under the listed price.

If the card looks perfectly centered, with crisp edges and corners, and a clear front and back surface, consider getting it graded by a primeir service, like PSA or BGS. If it is given a 9 or better, you've done good, and the card's value will increase considerably.
