By the way there`s a big old world out there if you care to leave america and go explore.Plenty of people from america have tried it and guess what it broadened their horizons.
Popularity as far as the number of people globally.. I would say there is no doubt you are right but as I said that is the ONLY leg you have to stand on and it's a weak one...

Sorry Vanman - you can't lay that on me or Americans. It's plain all over the world that the bottom line is always money - I certainly didn't define that concept and if you leave your little corner of the world, you'll fine it isn't just an American concept, either.

Btw, before I became a sportswriter - I was a traveler writer and I've been many places, including the UK.

Not sure, DL, but it's always amazing to me how easy a thread can get hijacked in such amazing directions. This one even goes deeper than the football (American and global) issue since it's taken on financial and political tones.

Soccer is popular in the rest of the world because you need almost no equipment, a ball, and little room to play

So the poorer countries where people cant afford much, they can go buy a soccer ball and be set for awhile... as opposed to all the equipment needed for baseball, basketball, or hockey...

Also, it is US law that players must wear padding during a sanctioned football game, this is due to way too many fatalities during the early days of football

That said, I find soccer very boring, sorry any sport where the O/U is usually set around 2.5 goals is a snooze-fest... maybe if my country was only good at one sport, being soccer, then I'd fall in love with it like all of the European countries

And drop in on us down in little ol' Texas as well, vanman. I'll introduce you to Shiner Bock and teach you how to drive a pickup truck...all at the same time

Seriously, I'll take you to see real men and women and a sport you probably don't get to see too much of on that side of the pond: Rodeo.

Me to me to.. call homeland security and send them right over... I even have an arab name to boot and they can use me as the next booga booga... I'll dress up like "Bin Ladin" too and make a tape and everything... I'm sure I can find a Koran somewhere to add to it... Only problem is I look like an American boy and I'll have to not shave for a while.. That will cost extra!

                    Tell them I don't *** cheap though!

No harm, Nancy. Like I said, it's an interesting study (to me at least) how threads can take off in such ricochet fashion from their original subject matter. Sort of like that little game we used to play in grade school where the teacher whispers, "Bobby and Sally are both good spellers," to one kid who passes it on and so forth until it reaches the last kid who blurts, "Jimmy and Sarah kissed on the playground."

Let's really hijack this thread! LOL!

Currently drinking Stella (which I first had in a bar in Edinburgh called Misty's on the Mound) - it's a Belgian lager and I like most German brews, Warsteiner Dunkle being a favorite. How about you?

Lots of folks as sober as a preacher have sat on those contraptions and not stayed on the full 8-count as well, myself included. Of course, as mean as live bulls can be, they still aren't as mean as three most vicious creatures I've come across in my lifetime: the javelina, Shetland ponies and Little League mothers

Amen to that! Got a couple of 4-packs of Boddington's for Christmas and that's my favorite.

Also like the bacon over in the UK. And the curry chips. Oh, and Friday nights in Newcastle. Plus Hogmanay in Dundee. And the backroads drive from Braemar to Aberdeen. Playing pool at Quoiter's in that little village south of Aberdeen is fun. Lots of things to like about the UK, just wish it was warmer with more baseball games and a decent TexMex joint.

Gotta love the fish 'n chips with the malt vinegar, too. But down with the haggis - no sheep's stomach for me.
I spent 3 weeks in the UK and really loved many things about it.

Hey Vanman -do you play darts by any chance?
I can throw a dart but not that good, used to play pool many years ago.

You should try something like black sheep or marstons pedigree or maybe wyre piddle.

Trust me, van, I've tried a bunch of the beers over there, absolutely love the pubs. But I will take you up on the offer the next time I get over there.

The funny thing about the weather bit is the first time I went to the UK was in the Summer of '76 while practically the whole of Western Europe was locked in a heat wave/drought. People were literally stripping down in Hyde Park because it was reaching the low 30s (°C). Fun time and totally blew away the bit about London specifically and the UK in general being a cold, wet place.

Mmmm, love the haggis, 'nips and totties. Of course, I love boudin as well, pretty much the same only the Cajuns use rice and the Scots use oats.

BTW Jamie most Americans couldn't give you one team in ice hockey. Now Canadians can name you every team and tell you who plays for them. Yanks only care about a sport they are good at.

I've had Marstons, but I'll have to check around for the other 2. I'm currently in Asheville, N.C., where there are several really good local breweries:

French Broad River Brewery is Asheville’s destination for craft beer lovers, offering a rotating selection of brews, live music, and delicious pizza in Biltmore Village.

There's two or three more here, but the last one has a Gaelic Ale that I really like.

Nancy, compared to American almost every country has better beer. Now Bourbon, is an American drink that is done well there.
