ok SBR, talk to me about how much you pay and tip for a haircut
the chick that cuts my hair raised her price from $12 to $15. i used to tip $3 to make it $15 and now i tip $2 to make it $17.

should we even be tipping those people for a service that in general doesn't cost them anything to cut my hair and the $15 is pure profit?

$40?!?! Get a perm or something?

I pay my guy $20... always have. He used to charge $12 for a haircut and he got a huge tip, now he charges $15 and gets a $5 tip.

Most haircuts guys get aren't all that special and places want you at the door as fast as they can. Rarely do you get great service or any kind of real expertise. Now, that's partially the fault of the customer for not having any style, and for the person doing the cut for not giving a shit.

Depending on the type of cut and effort required, $5 is pretty standard. If you get a real haircut and pay $20+ before tip/taxes, it should be more because generally you're getting an actual professional doing the job. Or someone ripping you off. That's for you to figure out.

It's not pure profit especially if you don't own the establishment .Barbers have to buy their own supplies and pay for chair fees. Then you have income taxes.

chair fees i can understand. but my girl doesn't use shit but a water bottle, scissors and a comb. i think my $15 well covers my portion of said chair fees.

Pay $5 tip $3 to $5 depends on what I have on me. Lady been cutting hair 30 years she works in High end solon about 40 miles away been at the same place at least 20 years but on her days off, Sunday, Monday and Wednesday and nights on the other days she cuts at home has been for years, been cutting my hair at her house sine 1992 !! I guess she either just enjoys it or don't want to tell all those local regulars like myself that shes having an increase !!!!!!!

This. About two years ago they changed it from $12 to $15. Been going there about once every 2.5 weeks for 4 years now.

$20 for the haircut with a beard trim. $10 for my barber, $30 every 10 days or so. It should really be every week but I always forget so I usually go about 3 times a month.

P.S. During my vacations to Miami I went to a barber shop my brother-in-law has been going to for like 20 years (the place has been there since the 1960's). Since I didn't know any barber I just sat down at the first empty chair I saw. Old-school guy has been there longer than I've been alive (28 years). He was really good and I liked the fact they actually have air hoses (with a connection to an air compressor that you can't see) to blow away all the small hairs that most places brush away. It works wonders when trimming facial hair and it leaves your collar hair free. When he's done he walks me over to an old school register and tells me it's $11 for the whole thing, I guess Miami's economy is really bad and they have to work for cheap. So I gave him a $20 and told him to keep it, he looked surprised lol. I really wish that place wasn't so far, I would love to go there every week.

I think a good point was made earlier...it depends on who is cutting your hair. If it's a professional and they do a great job, a $5 tip is certainly in line...however, if it's your neighbor with a bum eye and a peg leg, any tip is considered generous.

Here in San Antonio, I got this place that only charges $8 for a men's trim, I go every 3 weeks...I give about $12 total, or w/e I have on me in small bills usually...it averages out to about $5 a whack probably.

It's more about wanting one than needing one. Also remember it's a haircut/beard trim. The whiskers can look scruffy fast. I just like to look presentable and if I go every week I feel like I look ok most of the time.

The little shop where I go still charges me the same $10 they first charged me in the late-90s. They won't raise the price for old customers (or maybe it's just they feel sorry for us old farts). I tip $3-$5, just depends.

usually from what i've experienced the $40 gets you a shampoo and cut from a gay guy versus bubba who charges $10
