When I turned on my computer today I got this blue screen that said it was checking one of my drives for consistency.

    Whats this all about?

Did it run some sort of scan? That usually pops up once in a while if my PC is shut off due to power going out or whatever. Has to do with checking hard drive files I think.

The computer usually does this if it was shut off un expectedly like a power outage or you just killing the power button and not shutting it down properly. Unless some errors come up it's nothing to worry about.

It may be nothing, or it may be your hard drive is dying. My previous computer started doing funny things before it died. I would make sure you have back-ups of any important files. Imagine what would happen if you tried to turn on your computer one day, and nothing happened.

Thats exactly what I'm afraid of. How long was it acting funny before it died?

It wasn't very long, maybe a week or two. This was Windows XP, and the machine was five years old. I was able to recover somewhat, enough so that I could save files. Now I make back-ups to a SanDisk flash drive. It's very cheap insurance.

Yeah backing up your files is a good idea. I had to reinstall Windows last week and lost a bunch of stuff, nothing of huge importance but still it's annoying when you look for something and remember it's not there anymore.

And yeah it was probably just a random glitch with your hard drive, if you're not noticing any current performance issues I wouldn't sweat it.

It's been working good and actually (KNOCK ON WOOD) I've never had any problems with this computer.

Bought it in Oct 2003 and barely used it for 2 years cause I was never home. Been on it a lot in the last 3 years though.

Hopefully it won't go out on my soon.

I don't think the particular brand matters, but a friend who knows more than I do says a flash drive is best. They hold a lot (mine has 4gb), and they are relatively cheap at any computer or office supply store. One problem is that they are very small, about the size of a small pocketknife, so you could easily lose it.
