Why is Jim Valvano so respected and revered by posters here?
Sure, the guy was a flamboyant funny character with charm and maybe would have been a good coach whether he cheated or not and his cancer foundation probably does good for people but if the guy had lived, he would have made Tarkanian look like an altar boy.The jury is still out on all the cancer foundations ever realizing the dream of curing cancer. The Rockefeller cancer foundation is the biggest and if you listen to people like Alex Jones, good intentions of raising money for that foundation are what is causing people to obtain cancer.I hate to think there is a cancer conspiracy but many people claim that there is in much the same way that they say Jerry Lewis has wonderful intentions to cure MS but it can't or deliberately won't happen. His telethons have been going on for decades and if they went on till infinity they still wouldn't have a cure.Sometimes nature is cruel and there is no man made cure for a problem.Remember the doctor in Kansas City who was watering down the cancer drugs to save money so he could pocket more money? The government put him in the slammer as well they should have for years but it's been a hidden secret that his patients on average lived longer without the medication. Some people say that radiation and chemotherapy are worse than the cancer itself.Critics that are doctors who preach alternative medicine will say that curing cancer and MS has become too much of an industry where too many people depend on a steady flow of lingering sick patients to provide incomes for people in the industry. If they found a cure, they would put themselves out of business like the guy who owns the repair shop fixing VCR's,35 MM film cameras and analogue tv's a little over a year from now. Then there is that other dark conspiracy of population control by the richest banking families in the world who contribute to cancer research where they want to eliminate a hefty percentage of people.

So if Tark the shark gets cancer and dies and sets up a foundation and courageously lingers on losing his last one hair should all his sins not only be gorgiven but should we have things like the Tark awards on ESPN and such?

They say that sometimes stress can lead to getting cancer and Jim Valvano certainly gave himself allot of stress in life with his recruiting scandals, academic fraud and maybe even a point shaving scandal he profited from against the University of Tampa? It's amazing that the guy is so revered and held up like a hero amongst bettors.

Sure,no one is perfect and we all have hidden secrets and sins we most likely got away with but we aren't campaigning or having other people after we die campaigning that we should achieve sainthood. That's where my problem lies with Valvano and his devotees.

Who would you more likely do business with if they owned or were a frontman for an offshore sportsbook.Jim Valvano,Barry Switzer,Clem Haskins,Lou Holtz or Jerry Tarkanian.I could add a few more. VINCE ** MAHON,DON KING.

Those Jimmy V and Dick Vital catch phrases like stay positive, stay in school and who loves you baby etc.never did much for me and they are pretty hypocritical coming from those people. It sort of reminds me of Bill Clinton showing up at AIDS Day speeches telling how we can find a cure for AIDS.

I hope your not implying that he brought cancer on himself.

    Anyway,

Jimmy V foundation has raised millions of dollars for cancer research. He did not want to set up this foundation so his name would be always remembered. His last wishes were to help others b/c he was too far along to be helped. He used his connections in the sports world to set up this wonderful foundation before he died. He spend alot of his last hours putting this foundation into place.

Im not completing sure what your point is here, but if i got it right then your saying the foundation is for personal gain somehow, and because someone made some mistakes, no matter what great things they do going forward should never be recongized? I think your walkin on thin ice here.

LOL! That's what I was thinking. I've never seen anyone here mention Jim Valvano. Just for the hell of it, I did a search and found only one mention of Jim Valvano since May 2006. It was neither respectful nor reverential. It couldn't have been more neutral.

I think BrentCrude has a few synapses misfiring.

I'd like to say that you have done a good job of refuting the argument - if someone had actually made it - but you really haven't.

                  Nice find Yis.

I said this the other day...Crude is posting a lot more these days.

                  2 possible reasons why.

                  1. His fridge is empty.

                  2. He is off his meds.

He's revered mostly because he's a likeable guy who had an untimely death.

People really need to pay attention to what I'm about to say, because there is tremendous ignorance on the issue of "cancer". First of all there is no such thing as generic "cancer". There is breast, colon, prostate, thyroid, bone, lymphoma, sarcoma, ovarian, testicular, and on and on an on ... each of these is very specific. It happens for a variety of reasons, but basically they break down to:

                        A. Bad genes
                        B. Environment/behaviors (+ bad genes)
                        C. Aging

In a majority of the cases, cancer really is in fact normal aging. We've pretty much figured out how to keep ourselves alive for a long time (compared to historical human standards) --- and I know it's not a news flash but we have to die of something. It's critical to understand this.

I also hate to be picky about Jimmy V, because I think the overall gist is valuable (laugh, cry, think), but if you did what he recommended you'd be an absolute mess.

He said, "Cancer can take away all of my physical abilities. It cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart, and it cannot touch my soul."

He's right on the heart and soul, but the mind is physical and I'm fairly certain cancer took out his mind within a month of the speech.

The point here is to BE GRATEFUL for life because it is a gift. Due to secular pressures most want to shy away from saying it, but it is a gift from God and we should always try to remember this fact.

Should we do all we can to help those who suffer? Absolutely. I feel that longevity, however, has become the new god, the new idolatry.

I didn't add the badges to my signature. I have no control over when they're added or removed. I can't help that I win at a few things and SBR insists on attaching badges to my posts. If I could remove half of them, I would. I'm not proud of some of them, actually. See: Casino winner, Ryder Cup, straight flush, etc.

Yep, and as I showed today, he has a tendency to harp on the same issues over and over again.
