Federal police officer shot dog in Arundel park

Stunned dog owners and residents of a Severn neighborhood are shocked that authorities won't be charging a federal police officer who shot and killed a Siberian husky Monday night at a community dog park.

Bear-Bear, a brown and white husky that was about 3 years old, was playing in the Quail Run dog park at about 6:30 p.m., running off leash inside the fenced-in area, when the officer and his wife arrived with a German shepherd, who was kept on a leash. When the dogs began to play roughly, the federal officer asked Bear-Bear's guardian, his owner's brother, to call off the dog. But before he could do anything, the officer pulled out a gun and shot Bear-Bear, according to the husky's owner.

Bear-Bear, who belongs to Rachel Rettaliata, died of his injuries a few hours later. County police did not name the federal officer.

"I've been bawling my eyes out since 7 p.m. last night," Rettaliata said. "It's grief mixed with anger. We're so angry this guy was able to take our animal for what we feel was no reason at all.

"We still don't believe that he's gone. We just want so badly to be diligent about this. [The officer] has to pay some sort of consequence for his foolishness."

A spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Police Department said no charges will be filed and investigators found no evidence of criminal activity.

Rettaliata adopted Bear-Bear about two years ago from a husky rescue. He'd been seized from a Delaware home where people had tied him up outside, largely leaving him to fend for himself in the elements.

Tiffany Greco, who fostered the young Bear-Bear and placed him with the Rettaliata family, said the husky had led a hard-knock life, starved and neglected, with mats in his long fur the size of softballs. But even though he was mistreated, she said he never became aggressive around people or dogs.

"He was a very lovey-dovey, happy-go-lucky guy," Greco said, adding that Bear-Bear at least had a taste of a good life with the Rettaliatas. "All this dog wanted to do was curl up on top of you."

She said that huskies have a rough way of playing that, to people who don't know them, can seem intimidating.

"They have a much different play style than other dogs," she said. "They're a rough-and-tumble breed. They're mouthy. Often people interpret that as being aggressive when it's really them just playing."

In the Quail Run community of townhomes, a number of residents have dogs that they walk to the community dog park. Neighbors say the park is generally an easygoing place where well-mannered dogs play with one another.

    Bear-Bear was a regular there.

Tarnna Hernandez saw Bear-Bear all the time. She lives two doors down from the Rettaliatas and Bear-Bear plays with her children and Marshmallow, her year-and-a-half-old Dalmatian/Australian shepherd mix.

"I've never personally seen him be aggressive toward any dog or human or anything, for that matter," Hernandez said. "My two very young children love Bear-Bear and would attack him every time they saw him with hugs and love."

She can't believe Bear-Bear would ever do anything to deserve being shot.

"I have not seen that dog hurt anyone. Or snarl. He's never even barked," she said. "His only way was to get out a gun out and shoot him? Uh-uh. It's completely unbelievable."

Dorothy Pearce, the homeowner's association manager, was appalled that someone would fire a gun in the community dog park — at dinnertime.

"This is tragic," she said. "A community of homeowners with children playing around should not have gun-crazy, off-duty policemen shooting in their area, especially a dog in a controllable situation."

Rettaliata said that after the officer shot Bear-Bear, the dog didn't yelp or cry, just lay down in the grass, bleeding heavily. "He just went and laid down," she said. "I just can't get over it and I don't think it's being taken seriously because it was an animal involved."

Carolyn Kilborn, chairwoman of the organization Maryland Votes for Animals, based in nearby Annapolis, thought the authorities should be investigating the case thoroughly.

"The killing of the dog in Severn is a sad situation that should be investigated carefully to determine if the incident was caused by a dangerous dog or a dangerous person," she said.

WTF is wrong with cops these days? I'm constantly reading stories on these guys shooting peoples pets for no reason. Here this worthless **** shoots a dog right in the park and as usual our corrupt court system always lets these fucks get away with it. If it was me I would be coming after this guy hard with a bat or lead pipe and I would pummel the living shit out of him. I would be getting even no matter what it cost me personally.

Police dogs are different from regular dogs because the value of the dog increases everyday the officer saw Bear Bear attack federal money that he would be held accountable for if anything happpened to that dog.

laying on the ground with two guys holding him down and shot in the back. Lucky there was video of this or he would have gotten away with it. Clearly 1st degree murder but the corrupt court system will probably make him serve less than a year.

ya, her dog is just a dog. His dog is an "officer"

lets say she had a permit to carry and she felt her dog was being threatened, she pulls her gun and kills his dog. I wonder if she walking away no charges?

Always keep your dogs leashed. If I had my dog on a leash and someone else's dog was unleashed and started fighting with my leashed dog I would have shot the owner of the dog first.

the day i realized cops are worthless is when i was 15 and some guy was trying to kick down the door inside my garage that lead into my house. I was awoke by my mother, white as a ghost, and we started to put the bed and dresser in front of the bedroom door. We called the cops and thank the great spaghetti monster in the sky, for some reason the guy couldnt kick the door open and he left. The cops took 20 MINUTES to get there and I was ******* livid. I made sure I was never that defenseless again. I wish I could go back in time now and open the door for that gentlemen.

Another turd cop with small man complex.

Emily are you are idiot? Listen I have been a cop for almost 9 years. Traffic stops are extremely dangerous. You have not clue. Just because you had a bad experience with a police officer I am sorry. Don't let a small group change you opinion of all police.

JUST FOR POSTING THAT VIDEO I would have to guess you are a young girl under 25 and haven't lived in the real world yet. I do not mean to be disrespectful, its just your argument for why you do not like police is so young and immature.

I will tell all of you this, there ARE BAD COPS... YES I SAID IT!!!! and you know what we are getting more and more each day. They are making no good citizen want to be the police at this time. I am actually about to quit so I can get in the private sector and work for myself.

I think if you would have posted the video of the cop who shot the kid in Oakland... I might agree or the cop a few years ago for Riverside, CA I might agree. This cop who pulled over the kid on the bike did nothing wrong at all. I actually think he was calmer than I would be.

That was Felony Fleeing to Elude here in Florida and a he would be going to jail with a FELONY!!!

Anyways I don't mean to vent, but I will stick up and go to my grave fighting for a good cop and will not let some immature young women who doesn't even know what the heck she is talking about to come in here and ruin my day by posting that shit!

An off-duty officer shot and killed an unarmed man early Saturday outside a nightclub after the man made advances toward a woman who was with the officer, Baltimore police said.

Police said they are investigating whether alcohol was a factor.

The officer declined to take an alcohol breath test.

The officer was leaving the local nightclub early Saturday when the man started making advances toward the officer's companion, said police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. Guglielmi said it turned into an argument that then became physical.

The officer, who Guglielmi said is a 15-year veteran, has not been named. The man who was shot was identified as Tyrone Brown, 32.

A preliminary investigation found Brown was shot multiple times, and investigators found 13 shell casings from the officer's department-issued weapon at the scene, Guglielmi said.

Police Commissioner Frederick H. Bealefeld III has ordered his senior commanders to oversee the investigation. Guglielmi said the officer was being questioned, which is customary in shootings involving an officer.

The State's Attorney's Office will review the evidence and decide whether to file charges, which also is customary, he said.

Officers typically carry their service weapons while off-duty in Baltimore, but Guglielmi said they should not be carrying their guns if they intend to become intoxicated.

LVBOUND, you are honest enough to say some cops are bad, well are you honest enough to admit in the 9 years of work how many times you have abused your power or witnessed one of your fellow cronies do it and say nothing? The fact of the matter is it is easy talk when YOU have the gun and right to just about whatever the **** you want.
(I obviously dont expect a real answer, because I already know it )

nice mlb record by the way, you posting those picks somewhere?

and believe me im not say individual cop hater. If I was walking down the street and I saw some cop needed some serious help id be the first guy in. The setup of the system tho is bullshit and what I hate, the cop in the article should be in jail and as should many others.

Brooks...... I have made many mistakes as a young cop. Thank god I was smart enough then, not to make the type of mistakes that are illegal. But yeah I have thought since I was a cop I was better than some people. This all changed when my cousin went to prison and his only friend or family member to visit him in jail was me for 3 years.

See when I first started the job, I thought it was all about the numbers... How many arrests could I make, how many guns could I get, how many stolen cars could I chase.

As I got older and grew as a man and found interests OUTSIDE OF POLICE WORK. I saw that I had been blinded by the job.

I decided from then on I was going to be a different cop. At that time I was working narcotics for my agency (In South Florida). I began to work on the CORRECTING THE BEHAVIOR instead of just punishing the behavior. I worked with Juveniles in every attempt not to give them their first FELONY, which would change their life forever. I tried to work with these young adults I dealt with and tried to explain to them how to make it in the world. How to take the street sense they had been using in the streets and transform it to a good career.

Brooks as I can tell by your name you are 25 and are still real young. I couldn't ask you to understand what I am saying because 9 years ago I was 25 and rookie on the force. I am now 34 years old and very seasoned.

I will speak to anyone about the truth behind police work and what it really takes to make it. I do not believe this is the best forum for that, but I will speak my mind.

                                                        Matt
Oh and my picks I started posting them along time ago, but i am just to lazy really. I keep and excel spreadsheet and I can post some picks from that every now and again.

and maybe if the asshole on the bike wasn't creating a dangerous situation for other motorists by driving like an idiot, he wouldn't have got pulled over. don't make excuses for an asshole that is breaking the law, i hate that shit.

as for other stories, you could find hundreds of stories where some waste of human life kills another person/animal for no good reason. so the guy killing the dog is Mike Vick with a badge?

you are making the case that all cops are bad because less than 1% of them happen to be evil people? should we then say all young black men are evil because some shoot others? all priests are evil because a few abuse kids? all NFL players are evil cause a couple get arrested?

                                                                    grow up.

Just wanted to chime in and say that I don't know why you are belittling people by saying "you're obviously young and can't understand this." Your name is ******* LVBOUND and you're on a sports betting forum. Talk about acting like you're better than people dude. Cops in general seem to abuse their power and I hope that one day a cop does it to me so I can royally **** up their lives with a lawyer.
