To qualify with the tribe, you have to be minimum 1/16 pure Indian, which means a pure-blood great-grandparent. My great-grandmother was a pure-blood Iroquois. That means I sneak in there as 1/16 pure Indian.

My search begins for the nearest tribe.

Not sure, Sundin. Gonna have to look into it. Sadly I know next to nothing about my Indian heritage.

As a fellow Canuck, you know how we're taxed through the teeth and the Native Indians aren't.

No offense, I often make fun of Indians.

Yeah I imagine taking part in a protest here and there would be required to be accepted into the clan.

better than a tax break you should be checking into obtaining some of those indian casino profits.
you may have some large bucks coming your way there. if you do shuffle along a few SBR points to me.

I get a kick out of blonde headed blue eyed white people saying they are 1/16th Cherokee or some other Indian tribe.

The Native Americans in California are getting easy 5 figures for the rest of their life through the casinos and they don't have to stay on the reservation. I heard if the children want a piece of the action they make them live on the reservation for a certain amount of years. These are the people that are not full blooded Native American BTW.

Lucky you!!! I thought in Canada the cutoff is 1/8. If so, I miss out.

Not many full-blooded remain. Since the whites touched down in NA they're been mating with the natives.

I'm almost for certain that in Canada the cutoff is 1/8th Sickler. My dad who raised me (not my birth dad Willie Bee) mentioned that to me as he was doing the family tree and noticed that my birth mom (who has been in jail for 42 years) is 1/8 Native Canadian and is entitled to benefits, but I am not since I missed the cutoff.

                      Life is a bitch.

My birth mom has been in jail all because of my birth dad Willie Bee

I miss the cutoff date to get native status/benefits

                      But I still have Pinnacle!!!

Puckoff that sucks (the 1/8 and apparently tragic situation with your birth parents).

Looks like got my hopes up for nothing!

LOL about Pinnacle. Yeah it's like a Native benefit for us Canucks. The Yanks are jealous.

I think you're out of luck Sickler. I had a friend who tried this when I was still living back home and she got nowhere.

But your best bet is to get a copy of this form "Application for Registration of an Adult under the Indian Act" from Indian and Northern Affairs, First Nations or Aboriginal associations, or Aboriginal Friendship Centres and see if you're eligible. Indian and Northern Affairs is in Ottawa so it should be easy enough for you to get a hold of since I couldn't find a copy online to download.

I'm not sure, would have to contact a family member to find out. The Indian part of my ancestry wasn't talked about much. It was three generations from me. I don't identify myself as Native. I don't look like an Indian.

Same here Sickler, but I do tan very well. Must be the 1/16th native in me.

Puck, it's odd how quickly Native features are lost. Like Hen said above, blonde and blue-eyed applying for Native status.

It's late in my life to just now be thinking about the 1/8 or 1/16. To my knowledge nobody from the past two generations of my family tree applied for Native status. I know my dad didn't, and the Indian is on his side of the family. He would be 1/8 Native.
