    anyone know what that means? i am clueless. I have pretty bad eyes without contacts/glasses.

    I think 20/300 or something like that. Would i make the mininum for this or not?

    fu(king doctor mumbo jumbo. Sometimes I think they like to say the official / scientific term to make their patients feel stupid. My last physical the doc comes in and says you might be an ideal candidate for hypertension. He could have just said high blood pressure.

              from what I can tell, it reminds me of the prescription number for my contacts. For example, the box says my eyes are -3.0

              so whatever you are trying to qualify for, probably going to need laser correction

                I don't know
                I missed that day at optometry school,was at the track
                Seriously go down to Mall of America/wallmart to one of those eye glass stores that have an optometrist on duty and ask them

                      - 5 diopters would equal poor vision of 20/150 -200 in terms of nearsightness.

                      + diopter numbers are used to describe farsighted people.

                      Example: Reading glasses are +1 diopters to +3 diopters (which also corresponds to the lower panel of a bifocal, lower panel is essentially a reading lens) Go to a pharmacy and look over the reading glasses section, most people use a +2.0 diopter.

                        i can't see well far away. so i guess that would be farsighted?

                        my vision is 20/300 only farsighted

                        so would i qualify or not? what you posted is not at all helpful because I dont understand it.

                          Sorry for any confusion.

                          If you cannot see far, you are nearsighted (myopic)

                          Now standards for vision in countries other than US, the numbers are not expressed using the Snellen scale 20/xxx etc. Rather they are expressed as 0,5 as you mention.

                          Good news is uncorrected vision 0,5 is accepted as acceptable vision for uncorrected vision. In fact, it is the minimum standard to join the French Foreign Legion.

                          Medical aptitude is determined ONLY by the medical corps of the French army. No foreign certificates are recognized.

                          Minimum visual acuity :

                          * uncorrected: minimum 0,5 for each eye
                          * corrected: or [7/10 and 2/10], or [6/10 and 3/10] or [5/10 and 4/10] (total: 9/10 with the two eyes)

                          Correction in diopters (US measurement)
                          * near-sighted: -10
                          * far-sighted: +8

                          Today I watched a documentary about the French foreign legion… its not the first time that I’ve seen or heard about it but somehow today was above special. So I copied some info about t…

                          Hope that helps

                              20/40 or 0.5 vision uncorrected in at least one eye is the vision required to pass many driving tests (for driving without glasses)

                              You are MUCH worse than this.

                              Taken from here

                              Some interesting reading on how it is measured and what it means.

                              "The sphere determines nearsightedness or farsightedness. No sphere is noted as "plano". If the power is a minus, it is a nearsighted prescription. If it is a plus, it is farsighted. Mild prescriptions are in the range of plus or minus 1 to 3, while high prescriptions are over plus or minus 5 to 7."

                                I'm -1.25. I think the minus might have to do with nearsighted/farsighted?
