Anyone see the episode of Pawn Stars where his kid Big Hoss buys the 38k used hot air balloon without the dad's and old man's approval?Just looking at the balloon made you cringe thinking of maintenance and depreciation.Who in their cotton picking mind that's been around the pawn shop industry for all his growing up years would get suckered into buying a POS used air balloon for 38 grand? It's getting where the History Channel budgets a big chunk of money for each episode and they stage these blunders on purpose just to attract an audience who thinks it's funny.I have to admit that it did look like his dad was pissed beyond belief over it.I think the show has become totally staged, scripted, set up etc.but it's still fun to watch.Anyone going to the bash taking a walk over to the pawn shop?

#6I don't buy the balloon thing either. The seller must have called the shop in order for them to send out Hoss in the first place, so somebody higher up knew about it, IMO. It is staged out of necessity.Comment -

#13How the Hell would that kid know what a balloon is worth ? I wouldn't have a clue what a new one sells for, or who I might be able to sell it to.
Another obvious staged "event" was Chumlee dropping the ball and chain through a glass display case....had to be intentional ( glass was probably already scratched and needed replacement).Comment -

#16I like the show, but some of it does looked staged. Going to the bash, but not going to walk to the Pawnstar's store. Heard it's a small shop and the regulars on tv are usually not there on weekends.Comment -

#23The part that gets me is when they call the experts in and right there in front of the customer he tells the pawn people what something is worth. I'm in the business and we would never do that. You don't want the guy telling your customer how much something is worth? You take him to the backroom or you let him know do not EVER speak in front of the customer as to the value of something. I assume they do this because it's being filmed and they want to come across as super honest. In the real world if a customer has something that is actually worth 50k and he is unaware of that the pawn shop is not going to educate him on what it is actually worth. Trust me on that one.Comment -

#25Originally posted by Mr Windy CityEveryone knows Pawn Shops lowball you. It's part of the business.
Correct. A pawn shop isn't a retail store. And unlike this show most of the transactions are much more mundane. We aren't buying hot air balloons, calf ropers and so on, we are buying drills, laptops and jewelry.
As to why they "lowball" you, they have to. We buy something depending on the state we have to hold it 30-60 days before we can do anything with it. Every item taken is sent through the Sheriff's office, if someone has reported it stolen then guess what, we are sometimes out of luck. Then if it does happen to be okay, we have to turn around and sell it to someone. People that come to the pawn shop to buy want a bargain! Why would you buy something from us if you can buy it from WalMart at close to the same price and have a warranty as well? The answer is you wouldn't.
I'm not defending pawn shops as much as I am just presenting the other side. When people sell you something they want top dollar but when they buy something from you they want it for nothing. In order to survive you have to buy merchanidse cheaply, you aren't a retail outfit, you exist mainly to assist people that have nowhere else to go. Most that have dealt with pawn stores understand this, you still get newbies coming in with a drill they paid $79 dollar for and want you to give them $75 for it, LOL.Comment -

It goes both ways though McIrish. The pawnshop got a used cordless drill for $25 from a loan. it is $79 on sale at HD, and they won't budge off of $75 for the used item. Go Fvck yourself pawnshop.... sell it for like $45, maybe $50.Comment -

Correct. We were walking down the sidewalk and didn't even know it was the place except for the large sign on the front of the building that said "As Seen on TV"..was told by a worker that the guys you see on tv are only there from 10am till 1 pm daily and come out into the store on and off during that time. I would lean more toward the show being staged than not being staged but not totally sure. The Pawn Shop is located between the Stratosphere and downtown, right before Charleston St. as you are heading down to Freemont, for those interested.Comment -

Damn Doug, you sound angry? Did you have a bad experience somewhere? As for your example I don't know any operator that wouldn't take $75 for a $79 dollar drill. If they are out there I agree with you they deserve all the obscenities you can possibly yell at them.Comment
