#6Did you check out the refurbished Macs? http://store.apple.com/us/browse/hom...mco=OTY2ODY2NQ - you can get a MacBook for $760 with full warranty.Comment -

#7First of all, don't buy refurbished... They are "used" electronics with a part or two that is new. Second, its not the brand of computer you should look at it, its whats inside. Mac are good, but you run into compatibility issues. If you want a good computer, upgrade your CPU and memory. Dell, HP, Toshiba pretty much put the same parts in their computers, but its there customer support thats different.Comment -

#8Yes I checked them, but it's for the Macbook, if I get one it will be the Macbook Pro, since they started selling them couple of months ago, but too much money.Originally posted by jgilmartinDid you check out the refurbished Macs? http://store.apple.com/us/browse/hom...mco=OTY2ODY2NQ - you can get a MacBook for $760 with full warranty.Comment -

#9If I were you, I would get an HP/Lenovo/Dell laptop. Macs are nice but pricey. If you are familiar with computers, id just buy memory from newegg.com and install self. Dell and HP charge double almost for upgrading memory.Comment -

$400 you get Intel Pentium Processor, 4 GB for RAM and 320 GB hard drive. For internet surfing it's more than adequate.Comment -

#25For many years I had been doing repair/support/other computer stuff. So, I have a first hand knowledge on various brands because I had my hands on thousands of computers. To make this short, while buying a computer you must consider a brand as different manufacturers use parts of different quality, design plays a big role too.
It seems you are looking for a value-type laptop. While considering the brands you will most likely to encounter in this segment, you should
chose between:
HP, Lenovo, Sony, Asus
do not buy:
Acer, Dell, Toshiba, Gateway, MSIComment -

#28Data hit the nail on the head. I also do computer repair, mostly warranty work and based on my experiences Asus and Sony are the way to go. Toshiba is not too bad, but i'd stay away from acer/gateway, dell and msi.Originally posted by DataFor many years I had been doing repair/support/other computer stuff. #29Have had an HP laptop since 2008 and love it except for the battery life when i unplug it, so basically it stays plugged in at all times.
Bottom line...get a WD external Hard Drive to back up all your shit on. Back it up, put it in a safe place, because i've lost all my files before and was not pleased, never need to think about it now. Have too much music to lose it all, would take me years to get it back.Comment -

#30I found the performance to be subpar compared to the Dell I previously used. It also had overheating issues to the point a crack appeared in the screen. I only had it for 6 months and received a full refund on it and used that to get an HP.Originally posted by TR88why that ?Comment -

#32That is why people have their own opinion. Even if it's just to mess around on the internet I would still go with the Mac. If money is a huge issue than don't for the Mac. We are talking a few hundred bucks, it's not like it's going to make a huge difference in his or her life. It's like driving a Toyota or Honda to a Benz or Porsche. In my eyes, you can't compare anything to a Mac.Originally posted by TridentIf he all is going to do is use it to surf he would just be flushing his money down the toilet as most do when they buy a over priced Mac.המוסד

#34Find a Dell with the exact same specs as a MacBook. Then throw in the money you will spend on anti-virus software for the Dell. The price difference is very minimal. The problem most people have with Macs is they don't make low end laptops like other brands do. By low end I mean low end specs. The laptops at Office Depot on sale for $400 are priced that low for a reason. They're crap. In two years you're going to need a new computer.Originally posted by TridentIf he all is going to do is use it to surf he would just be flushing his money down the toilet as most do when they buy a over priced Mac.
If all you're doing is surfing the web and you don't wanna spend $1000+ for a Mac, I'd recommend a Dell, HP or Sony Vaio. They're solid. Price wise, you're looking somewhere in the range of $700 for a reliable one with a decent processor and enough memory to keep it speedy.Comment -
