True story. If you order your food to go, they charge you more. It's not a lot more, something like $0.35 or something like that, but thats how they get you.

Don't belive me, go to Subway and ask the person at the counter, thats how I found out about it.

Why do you think when you go to Subway they ask you if you want it for there or to go, and no matter what you say, they still stick your order in that same plastic bag, but charge you more if it is "to go"...... Exactly, they are charging extra TO GO. I dunno why, but thats what they do. ******* thiefs.

I don't like when those fvcks charge extra 30cents when I want a extra sauce for my nuggets. It's not I mind the 30 cents but I'm usually having to break a $20 bill for it.

they don't here (california). Some places do charge you if you get it for there and not to go.

But there is 1 subway where I live that doesn't charge tax unless I get it toasted, and the other 2 I go to do charge tax everytime...

I was going to say the same thing but I thought of 2 restaurants here that charge you more when you take the food to go. These aren't fast food joints though. I guess the restaurants assume they'll make more money from you off of drinks and the chance to nail you with dessert although then they have to pay wait staff and have to do the work of cleaning your table and dishes so it still doesn't make sense to me.

And having to pay for extra condiments of any sort is crap considering you're already overpaying for mystery meat as it is. That's very common here and I think it's a complete ripoff.

but the problem is they don't get the sauce for free either. that is how businesses operate in the real world.

This is not the policy in Wisconsin. I get carry out from somewhere almost every day and there are no surcharges.

Never heard of this at fastfood...I understand it at other restaurants. I know most people don't tip when they get to go (which you should) and obviously they are losing out on drinks and such that you would normally get. Most places make a big chunk of their money off the booze and very little off the food.

i'm a big advocate for tipping (sacked groceries in high school and delivered pizza in college), but this situation does not require tipping. A person cooking your food and then handing it to you in a paper or plastic bag is not something that you would tip for.

Some of the Vietnamese resturant charge extra $1.00 for to go or take out. They won't tell you ahead. You have to look at the bill. They said it cost them money for the container, box.

I am not saying tip like 20% but I usually throw them like 10% of the bill....it is a just a nice thing to do.

I agree with 10% when you dine at a restaurant or have a couple of drinks in a bar, but for someone behind the counter who hurries to get my food and wants me out of the line as soon as possible, it's not worth it at all.

                                        must depend on the state

fast food joints in ohio can't charge you extra for TO GO but they are aloud to charge you extra if you dine-in. and they do.

True, there is a HOT FOOD TAX in California. Once that bun gets toasted it is considered hot food.

Many consumers do not know it will cost them extra if they want to have their food heated.

According to the California State Board of Equalizations sales and use tax regulations, it could cost consumers more if their food exceeds a certain temperature.

Section E of Regulation 1603 from the Board of Equalizations states, "...products, items, or components which have been prepared for sale in a heated condition and which are sold at any temperature which is higher than the air temperature of the room or place where they are sold" are subject to a sales tax.

The regulation goes on to say that the act of heating includes actions like grilling, steaming, or even "dipping a sandwich bun in hot gravy.

I'll do that if it's the bartender that's holding my food or getting it for me because they make their money on tips. If it's a host or something, though, who is making a normal hourly rate, I'm not going to tip at all.

Subway is complete shit in my opinion and I never eat there, now I have more of a reason not to frequent, thanks for the heads up.

It has been this way for ages but only recently, given the economic crunch, did the state send out notices reminding store owners of this policy. In California, "to go" is cheaper.
