Why can't people clean up after their damn dogs?

So I go outside after a nice rain (which we hardly get here) and I step onto my patio to the wonderful aroma of dog poo eminating from my neighbor's backyard ! Why do some people that own animals, namely dogs, not clean up after them? The dog is a Great Dane too so you can imagine how much poop is out there. At least I have a fence so I don't have to look at it. I like to get along with the neighbors so I'm not sure how to handle this. We do have an HOA here, so I may just call them up and let them handle it. I have pics as proof (though a good nose is all that's really required). No, I do not own a gun oror any large trapping equipment but any other suggestions would be welcome .

What some upper end gated communities are doing is now when you register your dog they take a DNA sample from your pooch. You guessed it, they find dog crap lying around they mail it in to run the DNA, then fine the owner of said pooch. As DNA testing becomes more and more mainsteam (and cheaper) look for this idea to become more commonly used in communities.

Bingo. To answer the original question, it's the same reason people who don't need to go ahead and park in handicapped spaces, they can't shut up in a movie theater, they think I want to hear their car stereo from three blocks away, they line up to board an airplane first even though they're in Group 7 and a thousand other things I can't think of at the moment. Some people just don't have it in them to act like a responsible adult.

Surely they scoop the poop at some point. I assume there's grass back there that needs to be mowed. Can't be wheeling over and walking on sheet. We had four dogs when I was growing up. Once backyard duties became my responsibility, I didn't get around to scooping it daily (lazy teenager not wanting to scour the yard every time the dogs were let out), but I had to cut the lawn every week. The backyard was for the dogs -- the family didn't really use it. Maybe my neighbours caught a whiff of it while they were in their backyard. Nothing was ever said.

Get about three or four big air freshener sprayers and nail them to the fence facing your neighbor, hopefully they'll be upwind from him, and they'll do the job.

If you confront your neighbor it will only get worse. Get a bb gun and shoot through the fence, the dog will shit on the other side of the yard. If that fails shoot the bb's at your neighbor and tell him the bullets are coming next.

My neighbor pitches their dog crap over their fence onto my land (50' from my back door, but behind my fence). After telling him that I owned the land and asking him to stop, he kept doing. About a month later, I befriended a chick at the county health department. I had her come to my house on a Friday afternoon and witness the poop tossing into my land. She issued him a $250 fine. I guess there's an ordinace against the improper disposal of feces(human or otherwise) without a permit. Since the county judge is a friend of mine-- he was also my divorce attorny-- I had the fine dismissed on the promise from my neighbor not to indiscriminately to dog doo onto my land. I even gave him a trash can to put it in.
