Seems like too much clothing for hot and muggy days.

#3Obviously you've never played baseball in your life. The long pants are thin and are not going to make you sweat any more for the most part than you already are.Comment -

#13looks professional. Like a long sleeve shirt on a professional guy. Is there anything more ridiculous looking than a guy with a tie on & a short sleeve shirt?Comment -

#14no way in hell anyone would be sliding in shorts. Here's a better question......Why do they make the players on the DL dress up in uniform when they're obviously not going to get in the game. NFL, NHL, NBA players that are on the DL or IR aren't there in uniform, they're in street clothes or a suit or whatever...Comment -

#17They also wear high socks to prevent the scrapes on the leg from sliding.
Sliding with shorts and normal socks on the diamond will result in a 2" by 4" area of nothing but scars on the front side of your leg for 2-3 weeks.Comment -

#18Thanks guys. I learned a lot. It makes sense if they are sliding on dirt to wear long pants.
Now here is the next question. Why don't they make the running lanes out of grass so when you slide it wouldn't hurt.Comment -

big part of that is tradition. also in the first part of the 20th century, bunting happened about 1/3 of all at bats. The dirt base paths, brought an element of artistry and skill in getting down the right kind of bunt in the right area.
2ndly, it is an issue of groundskeeping....especially with amateur leagues, that can't pay someone a full time salary to tend to their HS or Little league field which might see 2-4 games on weekdays plus practices, and up to 10 games on weekends.... you would have huge bare spots and cow paths soon enough anyways. leading to very difficult fielding for fielders....
also a few tough slides into bases and you would have major divits around the bases that could lead to turned or broken ankles later, when players rounding the bases stepped into them...
thirdly, its very difficult to turn the bases at a fast rate on wet grass.....
4thly, it brings a sense of depth perception to the fielders and spectators..... gives you some bearings on where the infield starts and ends, as your eyes are drawn to the lines ect....Comment -

#24Thanks Archie and others. I'm starting to learn about the history of the game. I like it the way it is. Just wanted to know more about the game.
As far as the heat goes I know in soccer adidas and nike make special shirts(climacool and cooldown I think) that cool the players down. I have a Braves jersey and it feels very hot when I wear it in the summer (above 90 degrees). I see some players also wearing knee high socks on top of the pants. It must feel very uncomfortable in hot and humid days. I was watching the Braves game this week with the Padres and the batters were wiping their sweat on their jerseys on every pitch because of the heat and humidity and they were just sitting in the dougout before going to bat. That means even being in the shade and not running you sweat wearing these uniforms which makes me think they are not very comfortable.Comment -

I could certainly see wearing a headband for sweat like some NBA players do, like the whole Boston Celtics team.Comment -
