Someone jacked my identity this week...

So it's almost noon on Saturday here and it dawned on me while watching these fat fukkers waddle around in the Yankees game that I never received one drunken phone call from any of my friends last night. I guess normally that wouldn't be too bizarre but I know a few of them were going out for a big one last night and the fact that I didn't receive one call seemed a bit strange.

I finally looked at my phone and it said the SIM wasn't registered. I thought maybe my son had just knocked my phone somehow when using it as a teething toy and so I took it out and put it back in. Still nothing. I went to call my phone company on my home phone and a recording said that my home phone was disconnected too.

Luckily I had a prepaid SIM here from when a friend came to visit Australia so I popped that in my phone and called the phone company who said 'I' had requested on Tuesday that my mobile and home phone numbers be disconnected as I was moving inter-state. Because of the 72 hour processing time I guess it went into effect sometime yesterday.

While I was on the phone with them I started to panic and checked my bank and credit card accounts. Sure enough, one of my credit cards has 38 charges over the past 3 days to really strange company names, totaling over $9k with another $7k in charges pending but not processed yet.

I'm now on hold with my 3rd police department because although the credit card companies will freeze my accounts, they won't begin the process of investigating for fraudulent activity until they receive a police report and apparently I have to talk to a specific department at a specific branch in order to get this done quickly.

How crappy can some people be and I still have no clue how they got my info in the first place?!

Happened to me once with fraud charges on my credit cards...

I get phishing emails all the time.....Somebody got into my ebay account so I just close it...

It will get all straightened out.....

shitty situation... happened to me when i ordered golf clubs from a less then stellar place (totaly my fault) and next thing i know i have 2k worth of transactions including online porn, grocery store in the states (i live in canada), electronics etc....... how did they get your info?... hopefully they catch the fuker

It's not the end of the world but it just feels like the last thing I need right now as I have enough on my plate as it is. But no one's going to die over it so I guess I just need to keep it in perspective.

Shari, this has happened to me...twice. A third almost happened when I realized that Info I had posted at a sports forum was compromised and a keyboard logger was installed on my machine. I nailed this one.

Yeah, you would think so. Once I get off the phone with these frickers at the cop shop I'm going to call them back and ask why they didn't. The only thing I can think of is that I use that specific credit card a lot for work stuff and there are times it sees a lot of charges go through it. Still, you'd hope they'd at least call me to check.

Unless they called me yesterday I guess when both my phones were disconnected.

Honestly the only thing that I can think of that I've done out of the ordinary is the fact that I've been using a PC laptop since my MacBook crapped out again. I'm not one of those PC haters but maybe there's something dodgy on this computer? I'm racking my brain to figure it out and I can't come up with anything.

I've had it happen to me just once, but I caught it early before there were too many charges & it wasn't that bad.

I knew I had some money going in an acct at midnight so I called the next morning to get my balance before going out of town & it was considerably short. Someone had paid their utility & phone bill in Las Vegas with my acct#!

Shari, your PC portable probably has malware/virus/logger/etc on it. I had a good friend check out mine and it had over 30 nasties on it. I now use the MAC for transactions (only) and keep the very latest condoms on the PC where I haunt places like this.

did you use your CC on this computer lately? if so to what stores/places? I would check for a keylogger on your computer, its a program that records every key stroke you make..

What do Aussies use for Credit Bureaus and/or Credit Report type system? You should freeze your credit report(s) to prevent someone from trying to obtain more credit pretending to be you.

It is much, much, much different here. In fact I've even joked before that this would be an identity thief's paradise. They don't use SSN's here for credit purposes - as long as you can verify your personal details you're good to go. And now that I think about it, I've never had one call about any charges on my account since I've been here. Even when I was traveling overseas and racking up big charges out of the blue.

Anyway, the police report is done, everyone's been notified and that's all I can do. Thanks again everyone and Bobby, thank you so much for that link. Once I get my son settled, I'll check it out.
