Where did the term African- American come from ?
Black is proper. Very few Blacks I've ever known use AA, Black is most common amoung Nigerians refering to their race....sometimes they even call each other *****....for some reason .

Archie Bunker used to call them Colored.

I don't get that very much.....in my best Forrest Gump voice.

Now there is this thing called NAACP, the CP stands for Mr. Bunker's colored people according to my buddy Lt. Dan....he almost died back in Vietnam.

The people that started NAACP must have been colored ( or what we call AA....or Nigerian on this here SBR place). I'm confused.

The African-American people must of once liked to be called colored ( right, Bubba) ? Honky didn't start NAACP right, Bubba ?
I think I'll just buy that fruit company stock that Lieutenant Dan wants me to buy...

Why isn't it NAAAA now ?

      not really.

This is humor, but I know not to be in an overly black place, way too many bad experiences.

I'd have a black G/F or roommate even, but I couldn't live in a black city like a Detroit.

Came from post-segregation liberals after political correctness got going in the 60s. They assumed for blacks that they would feel better being termed "African-Americans". But apparently "white" is ok, so the liberals are obviously saying there's something wrong with "black"

African-American is something White people came up with, when I guess colored was OK even to Blacks, hence NAACP.

I never seen a Black person take offense to Black....and insist on AA. I never called a Black person Colored.....I think they might find it offensive ( now) ?
          Too dated and 70's.

Black and White seem proper to me.

A black man can't call me anything.

          Honky, Cracker.....

I'd be dieing laughing.....that's the best you got ?

there just isn't an insulting enough word for a Black to call a White.

Blacks call themselves Black ( mostly) not AA, but they must have once used Colored ???

            Who founded NAACP ?

            some Cracker ?

What did Blacks use in the 50's and 60's ?

            I never use Caucasian.....just White.

Here in Seoul, its a melting pot like New York City, people from EVERYWHERE! One time I had went out with some friends which included White and Black Americans fluent in Hangul, Korean Americans who only spoke English, and White Africans who spoke both English and Hangul. It still doesn't seem right when a white guy says he's African, lol. We go to the Korean restaurant and of course the waiter talks to the Koreans with us for the order, but they had no clue what they were saying of course, lol.

Also, as a 16 year old kid, I broke down in Kensington (section of Philly), needed a jump start in a 100% black hood. I went in a bar for help, I thought I was going to die, lol. But the guys were great and helped me out.

You would be surprised of how many foreigners are here. I still am. Funny part is, what part of city do you think a lot of Koreans consider the "bad" neighborhoods?
Yep, same as in the US. I think its because they show all the American shows like, Cops, 48hrs, etc, which mostly depict the blacks as being the criminals.

The casinos here are supposed to be for foreigners only, and you just nailed on the head the typical crowd at Seven Luck casino. Just throw in 1 or 2 Americans, lol. Good thing the (major) casino's are for foreigners only, lol.

I shouldn't use the word "melting pot". All the foreigners here from all over the world have work permits, etc. You know how it is in the US, thats pretty much not the norm.

Is there racism, or is the foreign presence so non-existant that Koreans don't really know/care? What are you/where are you from? How's the standard of living?

                            Interesting stuff..

From Philly, stationed here in the SK. (The curfew which was in place for the last 9 years was just rescinded on July 1st, just to show you its "safe") I actualy feel safer here than if I was to break down in some parts of Philly, lol.

As for foreign presence, with all the military here (then add in their spouses and their children), the US Civilian workforce, and the English and Canadian Teachers here, it just seems a lot more foreigners than it actually is.

The Koreans protest almost everything, which is really good in a way, everything from bad Hyundai engines to better benefits for workers. And of course there are the anti-US protesters, but I haven't seen much of that in a long time. Especially, with all the bad stuff from the North, I would say most Koreans are pro- American. And of course the foreign neighborhoods are pro-American, thanks to all the US dollars being spent, lol.

Standard of living: In Seoul, things are more expensive, I used to live in Hannam, my rent was the equivalent of $2400 a month, but of course there are a lot of cheaper places. Food is cheap, although I buy from the commissary on post. Our money is worth more, so the dollar goes further here. My car insurance is only $10 a month for my cheap hooptie, lol. A lot of US contractor jobs pay $80 or more per day for your housing (totally separate from your pay), if you decide to live in a cheaper apartment, you can pocket the difference. I have some friends only paying $300 a month rent!

Racism - I really haven't seen any accept in small talk, a lot of Koreans, especially the older ones, are racist against the Japanese (for obvious reasons).

Jesus, Doug. Maybe it's because the NAACP was actually created by white people? Please read a history book. You might want to start by looking up biographies on Mary White Ovington and Oswald Garrison Villard.
