American football was derived from Rugby which was derived from Soccer (Football). In the beginning you could use your hands to play Soccer. When they banned the use of hands in soccer the people who didn't like it invented Rugby. And American Football (Gridiron) is derived from Rugby. In the beginning the forward pass was not allowed in American Football and most of the work was done with feet such as the drop kick and the running punt. So the name Football was more appropriate back then. Bad once the forward pass was allowed and the different variations of kicking the ball to score points were limited it didn't make any sense to be called football anymore but the name stuck.
