SBR is sponsoring a Building a Sports Database workshop in Vegas August 27th.
Free to anyone who wants to come out. The 3 hour workshop will be held at the Golden Nugget the Friday morning before the SBR Bash starts.

There is no charge, and I will be leading it.

We are going to cover the basic "how to's" of building a database from scratch.

All participants need to bring a laptop with Microsoft office (Excel and Access) installed, as well as have internet access for scraping data. The hotel sells access for around $12 a day, and air cards work as well.

The database we will be building will be an NFL one for the 2009-2010 season, but the techniques covered will be readily transferable to college hoops and foots as well as MLB. It is all data gathering and formatting to meet the questions you want to answered.

    Topics covered will include

    1) Data gathering and scraping (copy and paste variety)
    2) Formatting the data and combining data from different sources. For example, you may need to gather quarter scores from one source and point spreads from another and merge them. We will cover how to do that.
    3) Setting up your database to answer the questions you want answered.
    4) Using the database to predict possible outcomes as a percentage opportunity.

This workshop will be geared towards beginners. A basic familiarity with office would of course be helpful, but hopefully not necessary. We promise everyone attending will have a database of all of last year's NFL games in their possession at the end of the three hours, either by hook or by crook (if necessary).

I have had a lot of people over the years ask me if I would sell or give them databases for various sports. My answer has always been that "if you can't build it, you probably shouldn't use it, because you won't fully understand what the numbers mean." Well, this workshop is my opportunity to give people a database, along with the knowledge of how to build one and understand the limitations of the data gathered. "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day, teach him to fish, feed him for a lifetime" and all that.

If you have any questions and/or would like to sign up, please do so below. Thanks to SBR for letting me do this and sponsoring the event. I know the Bash is basically a party, but if if we can educate each other a bit in the process as well, why not?

I do not know if we will have 3 people or 30 people attending. Either way, it will be participatory, so bring your ideas and questions along. Coffee will be on us!

This is wonderful. I used to work for a company that would have a 5 day retreat every year & it was basically a party, but everyone would get together for 3-5 hours a day & have a hungover class on different topics related to our business

You should have it recorded & post it

A video or even a rough summary for those unable to attend would be amazing.

              Thanks for the feedback guys.

I don't know if accurate databases are hard to find JJ, but there is a certain built in security in building your own, at least
              1) You know what you have and
              2) If you find a mistake, you know how to fix it.

Mr Leisure, I expect to see you there. With your photographic memory, you don't even need to bring a computer, you would still be welcome. Hell, just bring a cold one and enjoy the show.

Your post is close to why I wanted to do this The Profit. I figure we should have some book learning type stuff going on, or at least the pretense of learning going on. What the heck, it is a convention. Hungover participants are of course welcomed, same as us sober types.

Sorry you won't be able to make it flyingillini. Catch you next round bud!

Lou and the boys do have plans Suicide King. They are arranging prizes, and I am sure taping for those who can't attend wouldn't be out of the question.

                Thanks for the post.

Release to Keez. It will ease your mind and then you will be able to talk the airline into changing your flight with no penalty.

why not just set up a server for people to download the files from?
Or am I missing the whole point of this workshop; Is it about how to download daily updated information and manipulate it into a database that you can play around with to find edges?

Yes, the idea is not just to give out a database.

In my opinion that is like giving a five year old a Corvette. It will cause accidents. As in if you plan on using a database you really need to know

                            1) Where the data is from and what it means.
                            2) How to correct data as needed when you find mistakes (there are always mistakes)
                            3) How to construct a database that answers the questions you want answered and that suits your betting needs.

You cannot buy that off the shelf and hope to be successful in using it IMO.

                            Hence a workshop.

I wish I could attend, I wouldnt mind hearing how they plan to do this...

Will there a webcast, or like a dail in conference line?

If so, i could try to attend through those methods.

Peep, if so inclined, you could video the seminar, then do some screenshot type type stuff & make a complete video to sticky in the think tank. This is the kind of stuff legends of the industry are made of

That way "certain people" have to decide how bad they want it.

                                      SBR is very advanced technically.

If you want the workshop taped, I am sure they can do that.

Contact moderators sam or Lou, they are co-ordinating the bash. If you put in a request to them about videotaping I am sure you will get an answer.

and...you say it starts in the morning...is that like before noon???
Me, too, about being good with Excel. But I don't even have Access. Should I buy it then? In fact, Peep, if you could quickly, tell us the advantages of using Access over Excel, and how much DB building we could do with Excel alone. I'm really interested in scraping odds, at different times of day. Can I do that in Excel?

And, about that "morning thing" .... I've heard about mornings in Vegas, but unless I stay up all night I never seem to see any.

If you just have excel, and do not want to get, access, don't.

I like excel for making the database, access for analyzing the data. With 2007/2010 you can probably analyze just fine in excel too. It is just that I am a creature of habit like everyone else.

I am self-taught in all of this, and I have no programming knowledge or skills whatsoever. I don't know if that should make you guys feel more or less comfortable lol. But we are basically just going to go over copy and paste, format and merge from different sources to build a database, then use it to answer simple questions like...

                                                                  1) How many total points are scored in a first quarter of an NFL game? Average/median.
                                                                  2) How does this number vary with the posted total? How much does it move in the 1st Q per total point (Hint: guarantee you it will not be a 1/4 ratio).
                                                                  3) How many times does a 3 point favorite win straight up? Are they a better bet on the ML or with the points?

                                                                  Those sorts of things.

Does one year of data mean anything. NO.

But I want to go over the techniques, rationale, and possible meanings of our findings.

This is an introduction to database building/using, not an advanced course. No programming skills necessary. I know, because I don't have any.
