While watching games, I picked up a guitar and started strumming a little bit. Youtube lessons have helped. Should I just keep strumming on my own or take some lessons?
Does anyone here play guitar?

#2I started last year with a cheap acoustic guitar and found that I needed some lessons to get started and to figure out if this is a skill I want to pursue...you get out of it with what you put into int, and then some...you will be learning a new craft...and and a nice one. Shop arounf for lessons, not only on the price, but research the bio of your possible instructors. Lessons around my parts cost $20 a week and that consist of 30 min a week...$80 bucks a month for 2 hours . Not bad, considering what you learn to take home and practice. Within 5 months of lessons I knew this was a craft I want to learn, so I tried alot of acoustics within my price range because I wanted to upgrade to a nicer sounding guitar. I knew I didn't have the funds for a Martin...so I am so glad I own a Seagull S6 spruce top. I am still a beginner but I really enjoy learning on a guitar that I am proud to take very good care of. peaceComment -

You can learn everything you need to know from books and videos, but sometimes there is just no substitute for sitting in a room with someone who can show you the right way to do something. They can steer you past pitfalls that "self-taught" guitarists encounter.
It comes down to you. Are you just a casual player who just plays for yourself? If that's the case keep plugging with youtube. If you are looking to do more aka play in front of people or even in a band, then I would tap every educational resource available.
I'm a shred fanatic; speed picking, sweep picking, 8 finger tapping, etc. It's a demanding style and personal guidance is good. On the other end of the spectrum, three chord songs around a camp fire is easy enough so that you can teach yourself.
Hope this helps.Comment -

#7ive been playing the guitar for 5-6 years.... i say take a basics course to learn basic things such as how to read tabs and or real music and then go from there and just practice at home at your own pace and learn things YOU want to learn.... go luck and eventually youtr going to hit a wall of not want to learn or practice but my advice is continue on...Comment -
