Randall Cunningham’s son dies in hot tub accident

LAS VEGAS (AP)—The 2-year-old son of former NFL star quarterback Randall Cunningham has died in what authorities on Wednesday called an apparent backyard hot tub accident.
The Clark County coroner’s office identified the child as Christian Cunningham, and said the cause of death was drowning.

Las Vegas police Officer Marcus Martin, a department spokesman, said the death appeared to have been an accidental drowning, but authorities were still investigating.
Cunningham, 47, is an ordained minister and pastor of a church six blocks off Las Vegas Boulevard that he runs with his wife, Felicity. Christian Cunningham was the youngest of their four children.
Messages left by The Associated Press for the family at the church and Cunningham’s house were not immediately returned Wednesday. A church official said Wednesday there were no immediate plans for a memorial service.
A man who described himself as a family friend at the gate of the two-story five-bedroom stucco home told an AP reporter the family was declining immediate comment.
Cunningham was out of town Tuesday, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, which first reported the boy’s death.
Martin said police were called late Tuesday afternoon to Cunningham’s home in southeast Las Vegas after an adult at the house with several other children found the boy in the hot tub and began trying to resuscitate him.
The child was pronounced dead less than an hour later at St. Rose Dominican Hospital Siena campus in nearby Henderson, Nev.
Cunningham, a fleet-footed quarterback, played for 16 years in the NFL for the Philadelphia Eagles, Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens. He was a Pro Bowl pick four times. He also starred at UNLV.
Cunningham retired in 2002 as the career leader in rushing yards among NFL quarterbacks with 4,928. The Eagles last year added him to the team’s honor roll.
Cunningham returned to UNLV and earned his bachelor’s degree in 2004 in leisure studies. He said at the time he wanted to set a good example for his children.
Associated Press Writer Oskar Garcia contributed to this report.

I have been fortunate but have friends who have been through this.
I have no idea how they manage.
                                    I am so sorry.

I know someone who's wife and 2 year old just died in a swimming pool drowning. The 2 year old was riding his tricycle around the pool and fell in. She jumped in after him and couldn't swim. Both died. The neighbor's kids ran over when heard screaming but not in time. They were able to save the other 2 year old twin who was also by the pool. Why would a mother who couldn't swim be outside with her kids close to a pool? Why? because most people don't think until it's too late. All it takes is a second for a kid to get in trouble.

I know another case where a lady left her 7 month baby with her mother. The mother left the kid on the couch while she went to the bedroom for just a few minutes and came back with the kid suffocating on the couch and he died. Incredible guilt to overcome...

God bless Randall C. and his family in this most difficult time.

^^Who knows, but it's hard to blame negligence when kids get into everything. Anyone that's a parent knows too well how easy kids can get into stuff and you have to be very cautious but even then accidents happen. Kids have been known to drown in the toilet so you get toilet locks but what if you forget one minute because someone knocked on the door or the phone rang? You get locks on your cabinets but what if one breaks and you didn't have time to replace and the kid goes into a kitchen cabinet and drinks bleach?? Shit happens. My 3 year old opened a locked bottle of aspirin once. How did he do it? Who the hell knows. He stood up on a chair and reached up and grabbed it and only because I was watching him did I see it all happen.

I agree that many times parents are negligent but until you know all the facts it's hard to place blame. The parents all wish they could do things differently after the fact. Sad.

My kid is fast as hell and for a while he would run away from you and almost go out in the street. My wife could barely catch up to him. I had to get him out of that real quick but imagine if someone else was looking after him during that time?? Fortunately for us, we've never let anyone babysit him except her father and that's been like 5 times in 3 years. Most people don't have that luxury.

That was a pretty big kid in that pic! He was 2 y/o and that pic was taken last year!
