...and that of course...
Was the Non-Call on the so very obvious push off on Nate Wright
by Drew Pearson in the final seconds of the 1975 Viking/Cowboy
Divisional Playoff at Met Stadium....
The offensive pass interference by Pearson enabled him to catch
the " infamous " Hail Mary touchdown pass thrown by Roger Staubach....and
the Cowboys won the game...
The push off was so blantant...so obvious....it was a travesty...
The Vikings had their best team ever that year and were poised to finally
win the Super Bowl....
The ref who did not throw the flag...Armen Terizian was hit in the head
with a whisky bottle thrown by a fan...
Fran Tarkenton's father died while watching the game...
I was at the Calhoun Beach Manor honeymoon suite in Minneapolis
with my new bride as I watched on TV....she could care less about
football....it was late Sunday and we were packing to leave with the
game on.....Vikings led 14-10 with 50 seconds to go....4th down at
the 50...and I was already waiting for Page. Eller or Marshall to sack
Staubach and end it..
and then...the pass to Pearson....
My heart nearly stopped...told Annette the Vikings lost...
She said...Oh well, its just a game....
WHAT ! Just a game... She wondered why I was so upset...
I wanted to go to the game ...( told the new wife it would only be about
4 hours and then I would be back at the Calhoun...she said NO..
but she did buy me tickets for Next week NFC Championship game to
be held at the Met...a Game that NEVER happened...
That Hail Mary Pass in Dec 1975 ruined
...my day
...my week
... my honeymoon
...my marriage
...my radio career
... my life.
It was a dreadful day, a day without any words that could describe the horror........
Everytime I think about that day......
I have to open up a 12 pack of Bud..................
If it wasnt for Beechwood aging....I really dont know what I'd do.....
