There are people who post at this forum who do play parlays. What surprised me though was how many people view this type of wager (even a 2-teamer) as being practically equivalent to a lottery and would never ever do it.

The math is simple boys. There are 4 possible outcomes in a 2 team parlay. Each outcome is 25%. To break even here you would need to get paid 3 to 1. However they only offer 2.6 to 1. The highest I have seen is 2.8 to 1. Still the house has the edge.

As ganch has pointed out this changes if you can hit like 55% winners. I think this is the cutoff for 2 teamers to be profitable. Look up his parlay threads.

most guys on this forum who bet parlays are playing 5 and 6 teamers. parlays are a very small percentage of my bets, unless i've buried myself and i'm trying to make up ground.

Parlays will eventually take you under. They are "the sucker bets" , in any form.

You can make millions betting parlays. Here is what you do. On NFL Sunday put all the favorites in one parlay. Put all the dogs in another parlay. One of the parlays has to win. The payoff will be astronomical.

House edge on parlays: 10%, 4.5% on straight bets

The house edge on 2 team parlays is generally 10%. This is calculated by multiplying 25% by 360, which is a $90 return on a $100 bet.

The house edge on straight bets is aproximately 4.5%. This is calculated by multiplying 50% by 210 and then dividing the result by 110.

These are the average house edges. Some bets will have a higher house edge, and some will have a lower house edge or even a player advantage. For example, parlays often have correlations that the book may not allow lowering and/or raising the house edge. Some straight bets such as betting the dog historically has a lower house edge, than betting favs that historically have a higher house edge.

But generally, parlays are sucker bets for the average bettor, and if you have to choose how to bet $100, then bet it on a straight bet.

                      thats odd

cause when you place your $500 on 10 different games

and go say oh 3 out of 10

I place my $80 in parlays....if they lose....the risk is not as much as playing the even money straight plays

the suckers are the ones that lost 70% of their entire bankroll after one bad night

If you bet 10 games at $500 each the house edge is $5000 times 4.5% which is $225.

If you bet 10 2 team parlays at $80 each, the house edge is $800 times 10% which is $80.

So you're right if these are your two choices, then it is better to do the parlays.

But you are comparing apples and oranges, since the amount bet differs in each case.

What bettors really should do is bet the $800 on straight wagers, but then they can't win as much - so they play the parlay, even with a higher house edge.
