I've heard this stated a lot since the World Cup started: If the best American athletes played soccer, they would dominate the sport.

So just out of curiosity, tell me the players you would have on your American World Cup team. It doesn't matter what sport they come from, but keep in mind the difference in size requirements in soccer and the skills required to be a starting player on the team.

Darrel Rivas, Dieon Sanders and Charles Woodson. I think NFL CB's would translate into the best soccer players. Those guys are lighting fast and can handle physical contact.

I don't know about Fotbol, but the English speakers are starting to dominate cycling.

We now have 4 American teams and 1 British team, where 3 years ago we had 1. The Euros are getting where they can't even fund one decent team in the country French have 1, Germans 1, Italians 1, Spanish 1, Belgians 2, but thinking about becoming 1. BTW, when was the last time a Frog won the Tour de Frog? 'way over 20 years. I believe the last was Bernard Hinault in '85.

I tell you this because if the stinkin' Americans decide to come after a sport, watch out. Once Lance started winning TdFs on an American team, it brought a bunch of Americans into the sport.

Americans are more athletic than anyone else in the world. NBA players are the most athletic in the world, but they would be miserable playing soccer for the most part.

Soccer is a game of skill. Besides endurance, athleticism is completely overshadowed by skill in soccer. You need a hefty dose of both if you want to dominate in the NBA.

How funny - when I posted this, I was thinking it was too bad Nadal wasn't American because I figure he'd kill it in soccer.

And Deuce, I agree about hockey players. Most of the hockey players I knew while growing up played soccer in the summer and some of them still play in rec leagues when they can during the NHL's off season.

The arrogance in this thread is, quite frankly, absolutely ****ing extraordinary.

All this talk about your "best athletes" dominating soccer is a complete joke. Just because a guy is fast/strong, or can catch a ball like a cornerback/wide-receiver it doesnt mean they would be good at every sport. Soccer players at the top end of the game are FAR superior in a technical sense than any athletes from any of your sports, which are primarily strength and speed.

Stick to playing your rounders and netball just because you're the best at them
