Talk about a waste of good cow leather. The ball barely touches the dirt on a new ball and the catcher asks the ump for a new one.The old tradition of rolling the ball back to the mound for the next teams pitcher has long went by the way.I swear it adds 10 minutes to a game just fussing over making sure fresh balls are in play.It makes anyone over 40 feel like they were deprived as a kid because in sand lot ball the hide was off or the ball got soaked in water and either weighed half as much or 3 times as much as a ball should, and we still played with it.Where are the green environmentalist groups when it comes to bitching about this matter? It keeps the earth quake victims in Haiti in business making balls though.

They have 200-250 balls on hand plus the balls ar already covered in mud because picthers claim they slip out of their hands.

The home plate ump has to hand rub them (add the mississippi mud) before the game to each ball....

i'd say it wouldn't be over 100 balls, but right around there..... if there are 250-300 pitches in a game. I wouldn't think they'd need over 1 ball for ever 3 pitches.... maybe even as little as 50-60 balls in a game...

gosh they should keep track, and then we could start gambling on how many balls were used in game...

cap based upon the foul ball % of batters and pitchers..... which pitchers asked for more new balls, HR's, which 3rd base coaches threw balls to fans...ect

Think it's that low Sam? I mean I've been at games where a hitter fouls out 5-6 balls at one appearance at the plate.

The ball that hits the dirt is thrown out I think gets rubbed up by the ballboy or someone and then thrown back into the game.

Also after a ground out I don't think they replace the ball do they? If not then what is the difference.
