Soccer refs influence game more than any other sport
Hockey - penalty shots very rare; refs' influence mostly on calling penalties. And while they make mistakes, a couple bad penalty calls will not influence the game result much.

Football - individual ref calls do not have drastic effect on outcome

Basketball - bad foul call? big deal.

Baseball - calling a ball instead of a strike? bad call at first base? Not a big deal.

Soccer - call a penalty shot (HUGE effect on game result) because of a shirt tug in the box (Italy), miss a couple handballs that assisted a goal (Brazil) [and then ask the player afterwards if it was a handball? ], call back a goal because of a terrible offside call (USA), etc.

You guys should be capping the refs instead of the players.

Swiss player just sent off for an accidental forearm in pussy Chilean's face (he went down crying) after 30minutes.

Yeah, being down a guy for 60 minutes isn't a huge effect.

Maybe but they can have a huge impact on any sport, in basketball one call matters the least but you see game where one team gets every call sometimes more than any other sport. One bad call on a ball or safe can lead to an extra 4 runs sometimes. In football they can call back TD's on holding or a block in the back that is huge

Maybe they can quit calling fouls and call it MMA with a ball. Then all games end 0-0. Then everyone is happy with the draw. Just a few broken limps and go at it again next day.

When I am talking here, I am assuming the ref is not crooked and biased against one team. In any sport if the ref is out to get a team, it is pretty much lights out. I am saying if there is a bad call, it is most important in soccer.

pavy, have you been watching the games? What percentage of fouls called do you think are actually fouls and not dives? And that is beside the point, I am talking about plays in the box and cards.

But I am dying to hear your answer for what % of called fouls are actually fouls.

90% of what is called are fouls. Fouls are not only kicks to the legs. Elbows, pushing, shoving, holding of player, holding of jersey, stomping on feet, head butts, tripping, handballs, attempts to touch the ball with hands, spitting are all infractions. One other item you don't see on TV is sound. A lot of times players cuss at the refs and this is also a foul but to the square watching the game on TV it doesn't seem as a foul.

I read recently that in the 2006 world cup, an independent analysis was done, and the refs got the offsides call wrong about 25% of the time, counting both when they called it when it shouldn't be, and not calling when it should.

For a sports' refs to be wrong 25% of the time on a very basic and essential part of the game is pathetic.
