Jazz: Nina Simone and no other. Love her love her love her. Especially "I Want a Little Sugar in my Bowl" and "I Put a Spell on You", Miles Davis is nice dinner music and Maria Rita is great because she has the most beautiful voice and I don't understand a word, so I make up stories while listening to her.

Independent: Alisha's Attic! I bought their first album without a reason really when I was 19 and I still listen to it. This album is the one I grew up with, I guess. They inspire my poetry and every time I am in a feminist or snuggly mood I listen to some of their songs.

Rock/Pop/Alternative: Alanis Morisette. Every single album is artfully crafted and yes, her manhater anthem of the 90s came out when my heart was broken. Alanis is my girl, she was better than any psychiatrist could have been during that time. Also, Katie Melua makes you warm inside and I like to dance to The Cure when I am sad.

Classical: Rachmaninov, absolutely gorgeous music. Also Chopin's nocturnes and Maria Callas' "La Mamma Morta" will make you weep and call your mom. The best German composer is Brahms...his Ein Deutsches Requiem is immaculate and gives you goosebumps. Buy the CD if you don't have it yet, it will change your life (everyone who followed my advice here agrees with me on this).

Hard Rock: GNR, some Metallica, Dream Theater

Funk: Mother's Finest (amazing female lead voice, check out "Baby Love"...the best dance song)

Heavy Metal: Remember the guy who broke my heart in the 90s? His band.

I think I did not leave anything out. Music is extremely important to me and plays a big role in my life, it always has been that way. I still dance by myself (don't have many friends where I live) and organize virtual dance parties with friends of mine who all live in different corners of the world. I used to go dancing till 5 am, just drinking water all night and being high on music. I also remember dissecting lyrics with my college friend, spending whole weekends analyzing songs and their meanings. Now I listen to these songs and find new meanings. That is what makes a great song/poem. Sigh...I could ramble on and on here forever...
