There is a line between prejudice and racism, no? Many people tend to be prejudiced because they are not educated enough or made negative experiences. Prejudice is almost as old as prostitution, it has always been around and might always be around to a certain degree. It troubles me, though, that especially a country like America, who is founded on diversity and "freedom", still is the home of so much bias. Even young people regurgitate what their parents tell them without thinking sometimes. Whenever a student of mine sees me in my office and tells me what I think is unheard of or outrageous, I know I have done my job well. I made him/her think. And that is the moment prejudice can stop.

I loved my time in Germany but I definitely encountered a number of racists while I was there. I first lived in a small university town and there was a lot of anger directed at Indian students especially, and there were a number of bashings during the time I lived there. At one point there was a sort of underground campaign, including veiled wording on posters, weird random texts being sent about rallying at certain spots, etc... to try to reduce the number of foreign students allowed to attend the university. I'm not sure those lovely people understood exactly how much foreigners contributed to the economy of the town.

And I experienced more of the same when I had to travel frequently to Munich for work. It usually took a few drinks amongst 'high-brow' people to get them started, but the stuff that would come out of their mouths was shocking at times. I remember one CEO of a large corporation telling a dining room full of us that he still has a hard time believing any blacks were actually born in Germany even if their identity card claimed they were indeed a national. His statements prompted other people to chime in with other crap about Islamists, Muslims, Africans, Indians, Thais, etc... and it just went from there. I'd like to chalk it up to two isolated incidences but it wasn't. I heard this stuff all the time - especially when people learned I had just been living in America previously. Then the vitriol would just spew forth as if I'd surely agree with what they were saying. The whole thing was just sad but as I said, it really hasn't been much different in any of the countries I've lived in. Some have been more vocal than others but I've witnessed it everywhere.

Even though I am spending lots of time in Bavaria every year and studied there, I have never seen or heard things like that, especially not in a university town or Munich.
