Doug, if you're talking about to live - my vote would go to Tampa/St Pete's. Much more to do.Comment -

#12Everyone here has pretty much summed it up.
If you want an ok (South beach is better) beach setting Daytona is great. Slow pace (except during Bike Week) and good area.
If you want an abundance of activity with slightly less traffic than Orlando then Tampa/St Pete area is a better choice.
If you want to raise a family and be within decent drive time to everything then Gainesville/Ocala area is best.Comment -

#14Daytona beaches are not as clean as Tampa/St. Pete. They have built up the area to be a little nicer, it was getting pretty seedy around Daytona Beach side. You can drive on many parts of Daytona Beach as the sand is packed harder. Water is kind of dirty. I used to have a condo a mile from the pier, sold it before real estate collapse luckily. Still sleezy beachside shops still there. Daytona dog track is a nice, new facility packed with simulcasting and cards located 6 - 8 miles west of beach near Daytona Race Track.
Tampa/Clearwater/St. Pete is much nicer in all regards, clean, white sandy beaches, St. Pete dog track live part of year, simulcasting dogs and horses year around as well as cards. Great places to eat, museums, Tampa Rays baseball, Bucs football. Tampa Bay Downs is more inland near Oldsmar but has simulcasting/cards even though live horse meet has ended until winter. Seminole Indian casino in Tampa recently upgraded with more games and is closer to being a full casino. Ybor City is a historical district in Tampa with party bars at night, good Cuban food. Tampa Seaquarium nice for family as is Lowery zoo. Plenty of places for boat rides, Charter fishing trips in Clearwater/St.Pete as well as gambling boats.
Probably good values everywhere due to economy and the oil spill which hasn't hit either side (yet).
Love Clearwater/St. Pete/Tampa area and go often for weekends.Comment -

#16I mean as a place to live, not visit.
I've been to Florida many times, but I'm no expert on the state.
Miami is too crowded for my tastes, has the NY/LA kind of traffic. I do like Miami, South Beach, etc., but would prefer that to be a place I could visit easily.
Oil has me worried on the Gulf side, but I hear you guys saying Daytona Beach/ Volusia county might be a bit dull after awhile.
I don't want Orlando, If I can live within a couple miles of a beach on either coast. If I move to Florida, I want to be on the shore, if at all possible, and that is very doable as I can buy for cheap enough around Daytona, TB, Pensacola etc.
Inland central areas of a state surrounded by water don't work well for me. I always lived within 10 miles of the beach when in California, often within 1 mile. In CT I never lived more than a few miles from the beach.
I have it pretty much narrowed down to Daytona and Tampa, and you guys have sold me on Tampa, have to sell current, so oil stuff will settle in that time ?Comment -

Y'all must have left Vegas for a reason !
You left Iowa for a reason.
You got a "9" type woman that's like 10+ years younger than you, and you're more like a "7". However you have like 5 million USD , I reckon, at least in farmland back in Iowa.
Your getting old FH ! This might be the time to see if your boys can still swim ?
At 50, what the hell, you'll be dead in 25 years or so anyway, take the 35 yo ( guess), GF and TRYTRYTRY !
Name your progeny DOUG, if a boy, or COOTER if a girl.Comment
