Poochie, you could have bought the Lakers at -300 just about anywhere and guaranteed yourself a nice profit.

Buying the Celtics at +400 was +EV anyway you look at it. If you continue to make bets such as this, it is almost impossible to lose money in the long run.

true. but you only get these offers when sbr knows they are in favor for themselves. it isnt possible to win in the long run based on points cause sbr doesnt make these offers all the time unless they have an edge which they had tonight.

If this was an individual looking to profit off the deal, then sure. Voluntarily taking -400 when -280 was available wouldn't be a smart move. But as a representative of SBR, a successful line offering can have different results, and in this case they were protecting their position. If everyone that wagered on the BOS +400 line had instead wagered those points in the SBR book on the Lakers series price, the book would likely be paying out big time on Thursday, but instead SBR is in the black for the day.

Simultaneously, the offer allowed anyone with half a brain to arb the bet with real money for a guaranteed profit, effectively giving every SBR member the opportunity for free cash. There should have been no losers on this wager. Period. Anyone that did lose got greedy and didn't stop to think about why SBR was offering a line so far over market...

Despite the loss, I'm way ahead on these special offers. Remember when SBR offered +850 on Boston vs Cleveland. Where were the trolls after the Celtics upset the Cavs in that series? A lot of them said that was a sucker play too beforehand. It's been mentioned before, but it's worth repeating : You will win long term by betting these specials blindly.

Says who? Real books would offer +400 Celtics ML if that was in fact a sucker bet. Even if the real ML (+260, etc.) was wrong in favor of the Lakers, this was still a good deal, especially for anyone who could hedge.
