because we are competitors and if i play a spot and kill myself trying to win the last thing i want is it to be a fukkin tie, ties are very un american, someone has to win or why did they even play, i realize this would be hard to fix in soccer as who the fuk wants to watch another hour or more of the crap while some tries to score a fukkin goal

I think it has to do with being more dramatic or extreme. It might just be one of those cultural quirks, though; are Northern Europeans really less dramatic/extreme than Americans? Overtime periods are often quite long, in my opinion, in American sports, which is less dramatic/extreme, as are season lengths, except the NFL.
