This is so fukking stupid! No one knows for sure when exactly the game will end!
Why not just stop the clock when needed? Is it that fukkin hard?

running clock
so time is added if, for example, a player is hurt and lays there for 2 minutes before being taken off
if time wasn't added, the team ahead might fake injuries to run clock.
There are enough players faking injury as it is.

I remember when ESPN first started showing soccer they actually had commercials in match. The funny thing would be when there was a goal during a commercial

Why do amateurs wait for the opening day of the WC to ask ridiculous questions?
Extra time is added because there are stoppages like injuries, substitutions etc... they don't stop the clock like in Hockey etc...

It would make far more sense to stop the clock, like in hockey.

I never want this to happen. As soon as the clock is ever stopped, we will get commercial interruptions.

you need your brain examined, soccer is the most boring sport to ever exist and shouldn't even be mentioned with the NFL. Did you have a blast watching that 0-0 thriller earlier?

It was a rhetorical question you cocknocker!
I know why they do it! It is fukkin dumb! No one knows exactly when the whistle will blow to stop play! That is what is stupid, just like the whole fukkin sport of soccer!
By the way, I am an amateur in soccer! I can't stand the sport! Nothing more thrilling than playing 90 minutes and have ties 50% of the time or a 0-0 score! So exciting!

It was a rhetorical question, but thanks for the feedback. My problem is...why can't they just stop the clock instead of adding time at the end? This way everyone knows exactly how much time is left.

Only 27% of all matches end in ties. And what's wrong with them? Certainly better then forcing overtime in non-KO-games i.e normal league games.
A great tactical battle that ends 0-0 is a beautiful thing. Defending is an art. Inter's performance at the Nou Camp deserves a mention here.
And I don't agree about the clock thing either. In contrast to other US sports I actually can enjoy an American Football game. But the constant stop and go is just horrible. And it would be even more devestating in football/soccer. And how is this supposed to work anyway? You couldn't take a quick freekick anymore as the defending team would have endless time to get into formation again. Rubbish.

Because towards the end of the games you will see players not trying to score and hold to the ball till time runs out like they do in basketball games and football games. When the players don't know when it ends they won't be distracted or commit fouls knowing all they have to do is bring someone down or kick it out of bounds all the time.
