              Sling box player

You can watch television from your laptop/desktop/phone anywhere you are connected to the web.

If you want to watch television on your laptop then you need a TV tuner card. Simply match the appropriate inputs from your cable box to the TV tuner card. It also has the added advantage of using your hard drive as a PVR. You can buy external and internal TV tuners. For a laptop application it will be easier to just use a USB external TV tuner.

As previously mentioned the Slingbox is a good choice if you are not computer inclined and has the added benefit of streaming your programming anywhere you go in the world. If you travel a lot this would be the more appropriate choice. I am unsure whether your hard drive can be used to record the programming while watching streamed programming on the slingbox but maybe sharpcat can fill you in.
