#22Cougar,
Great topic and one that mystifies me. First off, I watched the video and the drummer was fascinating and LOVED your comment below about Chris Farley. Soooo appropriate, even kind of resembled him. Now here's the question I have asked countless times. How can you tell the difference between a real good drummer and a great drummer? For instance, you take a well known drummer, guitarist, pianist, etc...and you listen to them play a song. How will they sound different than a Berklee School of Music graduate? I must confess I don't listen to a lot of new stuff and am sure I don't listen to music with the same ear and enthusiasm many do. But can you tell me if Billy Joel and Elton John were to play the same song would it sound makedly different based exclusively on their styles? If you hear a song with Pete Townshend playing and then Keith Richards (or Clapton or whomever you believe to be one of the best), would they sound markedly different?
I am just trying to be convinced that Mick Jagger would not have the same success if you put him with 3 other talented musicians. It's all about the vocals isn't it?Comment -

I would take Ginger Baker as my drummer, if I had the choice.
On second thought, given my music styling, I'd take Dave Grohl.Comment -

#32Originally posted by Cougar BaitI'd say from my experience playing in about 5 different bands, the drummer can essentially make a band better. In fact, I would argue that the drums are as important as almost anything else, including lyrics. As for your actual question about putting Mick Jagger with 3 equally talented musicians I think the Rolling Stones would probably not sound like the Rolling Stones if David Gilmour or Jeff Beck were playing with him. Could they be as good or better? Maybe. Would it be the same? Of course not. That's one thing I love about music. It can only happen that way, at that time, in that moment, with those players. You can't rewrite rock and roll. It's always evolving.

#33Originally posted by Swinging JohnsonNow I find your answer fascinating Cougar. I do not disagree with it because I am not educated or knowledgeable enough about music and instruments to take issue. As a matter of fact, I truly want you to be right because it's more interesting if you are. What I'm trying hard to understand Cougar is this. Each musician has a road map (meaning the sheet music if you will) that they must follow with their individual instruments. How can it be different if they are following the same musical map? Is there a video that you know of that shows 2 great guitarists or drummers or pianists doing the same song so I could hear the differences? Prob not but this is something I've often wondered.Comment -

#34Originally posted by Cougar BaitSwinger, of course if they are playing the same thing exactly after it was written and playing off a sheet they will sound relatively similar. I am just saying AS THEY WRITE the song it will always be different when you throw different players into the mix. For instance, just because the song is in a certain key, that doesn't mean everyone will be playing what they contribute to the song the same way. In fact, it would likely always be different.Comment -
