#73The only computer games i ever played a lot and that were awesome were Warcraft 1, Diablo 1, and one of the earlier Sim City games. Diablo and Warcraft were the shit. I think they have newer versions but nothing will beat the 1st ones imo. I haven't really played any games in years. I bought Sim City 4 or something like that a year ago and it wouldn't load right onto my computer.Comment -

#76Originally posted by mrmarketI do retro gaming on the PC. I went through Fallout 1/2/tactics late last year which was enjoyable. Point and click adventure games were my introduction to PC gaming and I have been foraying into them this year some. I downloaded Secret of monkey island for xbox live arcade but i did not enjoy it much. I purchased Kings Quest Collection for PC but I have not had to time to play it yet but I am looking forward to it. I am hopefully looking to play/purchase KQ, Space Quest collection, Police Quest Collection, Capitalism 2, Baldurs gate series and the Gabriel Knight collection over the next 1-3years. This is probably a pipe dream as the more likely scenario is 1-5 years.
That being said I now do most of my gaming on the Xbox 360 and have been happy with it.
Some games I have liked since I purchased the 360:
1)Fallout 3 + all DLC
2)Oblivion
3)Mass Effect 2
4)Mass Effect
5)COD4MF (have not played CODMF2 yet but I expect I will enjoy it too).
6)Half Life Orange Box (5 games in one which has great value)
7)Chronicles of Riddick Assault on Dark Athena (very underrated game which is really 2 games in one and also has great value)
I also have a host of games that are sitting on my shelf or at the store waiting to be purchased. Again it comes down to time constraints. Here are some of the games for the sake of curiosity: Heavy Rain, Dragon Age Origins + Awakenings, Alan Wake, Red Dead Redemption, Bioshock 1+2, Assassins Creed 2, Batman Arkham Asylum, Star Wars Force unleashed, Borderlands + All DLC and the list goes on and on. The good thing about waiting so long to play them is that I can purchase them inexpensively.
Other games I'm looking forward to coming out
1)Fallout New Vegas (Social life killer)
2)Fable III (play it to see another example of Peter Molyneux's delusion)
3) Deus Ex (the reiteration)
4) Force Unleashed 2
5) Brink
I'm playing Mass Effect 2 now that I have some free time and I wish everyone was privileged enough to play this game. If you don't have it buy ME 1 followed by ME 2 if you enjoy science fiction in any shape or form. I cannot say good enough things about this series.
And LOL @ anyone who thinks current television or film has superior entertainment value than video games. It has been approximately 6 years since I stopped watching television besides like 3-4 hours per week and I have never regretted the decision. I go to the movies occasionally on dates with the GF but the film is usually something asinine picked out by her. I cannot name more than 1-2 films a year that i have enjoyed and the only semi current television show that is worth mentioning is The Wire (I highly recommend it). I've already listed the good games out there and have missed quite a few in other genres.
SW: force unleashed was great too, but their DLC was so overpriced for about an extra hour of gameplay and a couple of extra costumes. hopefully they fix that and some other problems (the game cam come to mind).
have you played any of the KOTOR games for the original xbox? two of my favorites. i was thinking about giving the new pc mmorpg a shot, but i dunno never got into those types of games. but the story and dialogue was incredible so i don't know if i can resist.Comment -

I am weary about MMORPGS in general. I see playing quality video games as akin to a literary experience. One of the things that makes quality video games good is they follow a proper narrative structure similar to freytag's triangle. There are exceptions for narrative structure of course but the biggest thing that a game should have is a conclusion. Since MMORPGS are open ended I do not think I would enjoy them and not to mention they are a time sap. The tertiary reason would be that they have several addictive qualities (you can lose yourself in the world etc.) that must be taken into account for anyone. That being said if the game is extremely good I will play it despite all that.

#80Computer games are a waste of time...is anyone surprised I am posting this? Even though I have to admit I once got addicted to an 80s game (or was it early 90s?) called "Wonderboy"...this little Tarzan could kill wasps (and I hate wasps in real life) and overcome a giant that threw fireballs at him. In the end I beat the game!Comment -

#92Originally posted by mrmarketI have not played any of the KOTOR games as the Xbox 360 has been my first foray into console gaming since the Sega Saturn. I had heard of the games but last I checked the prices for them used were egregious. Once this current pc meets it's redundancy I will download them off of steam if they are available.

Market you seem to know where to find a rich experience in video games. do you have any recommendations for the 360 (besides the ones you have already mentioned, i own all of those as well)?

#95Originally posted by stealthyburritoi agree games need to give the its audience (the player) a well-developed narrative to hold interest, especially as the average gamer is no longer the teenager but young, usually educated adult. unfortunately used games tend to bottom out in price at like $12-15 (imo if they are previous generation, they should be no more than say $5). but the KOTORs are well worth the experience, the narrative and character development is simply spellbinding and i can honestly say those games made me a fan of Star Wars, and not vice-versa. of course it may not compare to some games now like Mass Effect (due to the limits of the technology at the time).

Well, I forgot to mention L.A. Noire but it's being developed by Rockstar so I'm weary as they have refused to fix their mixed up control scheme on the GTA series for years. Hopefully they will do something else with this new game. The story potential is there though.
Without knowing the specifics of the gameplay you would enjoy, Brutal Legend and Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection have entertainment value but neither are particularly story driven. The former was developed by Tim Schafer which has in the past created acclaimed games (psychonauts, grim fandango etc.) and the latter has nostalgic value. Check out this link to see the games it contains many of which are good:
Maybe the Assassins Creed series as well but the plot is laughable. Just suspend the rational part of your mind and the game can be worth playing. Ubisoft's historical depiction of the cities is good for a video game but they fall short in other areas unfortunately.
There are other genres like Real Time Strategy, Japanese RPGS, Sports Games, competitive multiplayer, and survival horror that probably have good games with decent experiences but I don't particularly like them nor do I waste time playing them because of this. Dead Space and Left 4 dead 1/2 are three off the top of my head that my friends have liked.
If you want a good story driven experience you'll have to go back in time and play some of the PC games. Gabriel Knight series, Kings Quest Collection,Deus Ex and Fallout 1/2 come to mind. You have to get over the graphics hurdle but if you can there is value to be had. They are cheap and pretty much every pc post year 2000 can handle them. Amazon, GOG.com, and steam have all of them covered. If you like comedy Sam & Max series are light fun. It's probably just best to wait for Fallout New Vegas and ME3 though.Comment -
