acer desktop problem

I am using a Acer M1202 desktop and using Windows Vista OS. this just started a few days ago where I would be on the computer the monitor would turn off but the computer would stay on. I tried to turn off the computer but i can't do that from the power button. I had to unplug it from the wall. I ran my anti-virus and anti-spyware programs and they found nothing. I also checked my settings for sleep mode and turn off monitor and they are all set to never.

whats wrong and what can I do to fix it?

Think its your IDE cord, replace it.

If all those plugs seem to be fine, try running the monitor at a very dim level for a while and see if the problem continues.

done that it worked for about 10 mins and then went off

Could be your video card also or the IDE cord which is:



Prongs could be screwed.

i use an HDMI cable but wouldn't it not turn on at all if it was a bad cable?

How old is your monitor?
Next time just hold the power button down for about 5-10 seconds and it will power down the computer. (you can also hold down Alt+F4 and then push arrow button down twice and then click Enter, and it should start to shut down windows).
Have you tried your computer with a different monitor? or your monitor with a different computer?

i got it Dec.08

I held down the power button and it wouldn't turn off

I don't have a spare monitor to try

I dug out my old computer monitor and tried that one and the same thing happened

Bobby had similar issues with my computer, was told it was the video card as well as the Mother Board had to buy a new one.

This is probably correct Bobby. Did you get your computer in Dec 08 also? if so, that stuff is probably still under warranty.

1- Make sure your cables connecting your monitor-Comp are firmly connected and the the physical connections aren't loose
2- Make sure your video drivers are up-to-date



Do you have on board video or a separate card ?

If rebooting your computer is fixing it temporarirly it may be a bad video card or overheating on your card issue.

Dunno about that. I have a 15" and a 17" laptop and a 20" desktop, all HP's and have never had a moments problems with any of them.


However Ace, it matters little about the brand of computer since it was a joke and another way to mention Velcro shoes.

well a quick update. found out it was still in warranty so I shipped it to Acer and they said it was a problem with the video section power supply. They fixed it and will be shipping it back to me tomorrow
