I don't watch the AFL but in the NRL you get 6 points for a score and then you get 1 point for a good try (basically like an extra point in the NFL).

I think in the AFL there are also field goals worth 3 points, may be wrong on this since I don't follow it, but think that is the case.

Anyways its a great sport to bet and follow.

You get 6 points if it goes through the sticks. If it crosses the line but not through the uprights it's a 'behind' and equals 1 point. Each time the whistle blows the refs are telling the players to continue playing as opposed to stopping as it is most other sports.

That fvkking whistle shit almost made my explode when I first moved here.

You can't kill the guy but you can definitely tackle and all of that as long as you stay away from the head/neck (high tackle). Basically it's the same as what you can do in the NFL but these sick fvkkers don't wear pads.

The quarters are 20 minutes long officially but usually go anywhere around 30 with time on - that's just the extra time they add on to make up for the time the ball is out of play.

With Aussie Rules players can either kick or throw the ball to each other (a handball) and if it's caught cleanly it's called a mark. The whistle is blown to say that it's a good play and you can't touch the guy while he's preparing to kick or hand it off to another player unless he moves from that spot. Rugby basically you need to run the ball across the line to score a try or you can kick it through the uprights for fewer points like the NFL. Rugby's field is much smaller too.

Also, in the NFL where you have offensive and defensive teams, Aussie Rules doesn't have that. Although each player has a set position, the players don't change depending on whether they're on offense or defence.

-Kicks have to be at least 15 metres for them to be deemed a mark.
-When passing the ball via hand the player passing the ball must use his fist to pass it otherwise it will be deemed a throw and result in a free kick to the other team
-Tackles cannot be made around the head and players cannot be pushed in the back

You'll pick the rules up really fast after watching a quarter or two brock, there is a game on espn3.com at the moment.

It's very confusing to me too, Brock. Its because we grew up with American football pounded into our brains & anything different is just stupid or not as good. I'm trying to reprogram my brain to think other things might be okay, but it's tough.

I had never even watched rugby on TV, If I can't figure it out in 30 seconds I move on, that's why I don't have my pilots license.

Anyway, about 2 summers ago I was visiting relatives of mine & my girlfriends down in Murfreesboro. I have an uncle & she has an uncle that live within 5 miles of each other. Her cousin happens to be having a rugby match, it was the state finals actually, at MTSU. Rugby is HUGE in Middle TN, there's even a town right around Nashville named Rugby, TN! In East TN its just not popular, no high schools have teams, etc.. but down there its as big as football.

Anyway, I had never seen a match so I went & it was pretty good. I just sat there & asked a million questions but I think if I watched it a little & studied the rules I could catch on real quick, the question is, Why the fuk would I want to??? LoL!

These fuks are out there beating the shit out of each other in a polo shirt & tube socks. The ambulance hauled 2 off in 30 minutes.

They all get in a line like they're running a train on one another & stick their heads up each others asses. I'm screaming "he's open, he's open!" then they throw the ball backwards a few times & kick the damn thing! Then they're in the orgy stance again, then someones bleeding. It's as confusing as midget porn!

I don't know a lot about it at all, but it's like a TD for crossing the line with 6 points and a FG for kicking if through the uprights. I think?

I think it's pretty straight forward, don't know all the technical shit. Offsides is a big one too. Where they do their faceoff thing and tunnel eachother, you can't run across the other side until the ball comes out and it's advanced. You also can't throw the ball forward, but can kick it.

It has to be the toughest overall sport in the world in terms of conditioning and physicality.

I'm glad you liked it!! It took me awhile to get into it but where I'm living you basically have to if you want to have a conversation with most people during footy season. It's beyond a religion with a lot of people here.

Teams do try to run down the clock but it's not so prevalent as in other sports. In fact the games that I've been to, I've heard people booing their own team when they've done it since they'd rather have their team try to score instead of taking a somewhat defeatist attitude and admit you're afraid of your opponent's offence. Things are definitely a bit different down here.

Brock, if you like rugby and aussie football, check out Hurling. Irish game. Definitely the most brutal field sport around... Very high energy though and great to watch.
