NY Racing Assn lays off 1,400 workers, threatens to close major thoroughbred tracks

New York's three major thoroughbred tracks, like Belmont (above), could be shuttered on June 9 unless New York Racing Association receives a bailout from lawmakers.

ALBANY - The agency that runs the state's major thoroughbred racetracks says it will close them down on June 9 unless lawmakers agree to a bailout.
The New York Racing Association, which operates the Belmont, Aqueduct and Saratoga tracks, made the announcement Friday after sending out layoff notices to its 1,400 employees.
The financially beleaguered NYRA said it would "begin the implementation of plant closures" at the tracks on June 9 - three days after the prestigious Belmont Stakes.
"NYRA continues to pursue solutions with the state of New York that may avert the cessation of operations," NYRA said in its statement.
The Belmont meet is scheduled to end on July 18. The storied Saratoga season runs from July 23 through Sept. 6.
The shutdown threat is similar to one the New York City Off-Track Betting Corp. made last month. Lawmakers refused to bail out OTB, which then laid off some workers and announced it had found enough cash to keep going for a year.
Gov. Paterson on Monday will send a bill to have the state lend NYRA between $15 million and $25 million to help it run the entire Belmont and Saratoga seasons, an administration source said.
The bill "will allow NYRA to continue operations through the rest of the racing seasons at Belmont and Saratoga while a long- term solution is structured," Paterson spokesman Morgan Hook said.
The bill will be separate from an emergency budget extender the Legislature is expected to pass Monday.
NYRA supporters wanted the racing component in the extender to force the Legislature to approve it or face shutting down state government.
While Paterson has said he is optimistic lawmakers will pass the racing plan, legislative leaders weren't ready to say so publicly Friday.
Travis Proulx, a spokesman for Senate Democrats, said if the bill "meets our objectives, an appropriate course of action will be determined."
NYRA blames its money woes on the millions of dollars it has lost because of delays in opening a video slot-machine parlor at Aqueduct Race Track.
It also says OTB has refused to pay some $17 million in fees it owes the tracks.

Does this graphic on NYRA's site already spell doom? They are pushing the Monmouth meet themselves.

why are all these tracks able to get slots to bail them out?

why not just close the tracks and open slots only casino? wouldn't that mean more profits instead of feeding the horsemen who already cheat?

The horse racing industry employs many, many people, the slots fleece people out of huge amounts and are usually installed in existing horse racing buildings (plants) so they can afford to give a cut of their windfalls and don't have to pay upfront to build new buildings. The horse industry means a lot to the state (every state they are in) and in this troubled economy it make no sense socially or politically to eliminate this industry and its large number of jobs. Many horse trainers do cheat but I believe everyone would be better served if extra policing efforts were initiated with some of the slots windfalls to make horse racing a more honest sport, while at the same time preserving all of the jobs that go along with the industry.

I don't hope for them to close down....but would it be the worst thing for them to shutter? Could a rebound with proper funding and policies occur?

BOTTOM LINE= There are too many horse tracks!!!! All of the good horses are going to the CRAP tracks that have gotten slots leading to WAY better purses. It seems like EVERY good track(Belmont, Churchill, Santa Anita) is run like a bureaucratic JOKE.

sucks i am a young only 27 but i love horse racing.. i don't watch it much on TV and dont cap it or play it while at a book/vegas.. but i love going to a nice track and getting dressed all decent and drinking and betting the horses all day from the box.. when i worked for the los angeles clippers.. the company would buy us a box at the hollywood race track twice a month during the summer on friday nights.. i think it was some deal they probably worked out.. i then discovered Santa Anita a ways away and just fell in love with it..

Florida has rich racing history.. Hialeah Race Track was once one of the best tracks in the country http://www.hialeahparkracing.com/ and i just found out they are bringing racing back there which is huge news and i am very happy about that..

The new Gulfstream park / casino facility is also a must visit if in South Florida guys.. that along with the Hard Rock Casino there...

I am hopping to go back home to miami soon and would love to catch the races when they start up again at that park..

Albany will bail them out. In the long run between unemployment and such, it would be cheaper.

$25 million coming NYRA's way. Patterson found it under his mattress. All is well in the Big Apple (for now).
