Bayern has history on its side. One of the few teams with a subscription to this final. By comparison, Inter is just happy to be there.

Van Gaal won't walk into the Mourinho knife like Chelsea and Barca. Because of the very high soccer IQ of the two coaches I expect a chess match. With all the excitement that chess matches usually bring...

MADRID — Champions League Final referee Howard Webb has faced criticism this season for allowing his normally high standards to slip.

The Englishman, a shaven-headed, charismatic figure in the image of retired Italian referee Pierluigi Collina, has steadily risen to the top of the refereeing tree and can expect top assignments at the World Cup in South Africa next month <emdash /> as long as he doesn't slip up in Madrid on Saturday when Bayern Munich faces Inter Milan.

In the English Premier League, Webb was frequently criticized this season for either allowing play to carry on despite foul challenges or simply missing them. His willingness to appear on television after games to explain decisions has won him friends, however.

While a few have accused him of being too lenient with major teams and players, no one questions his physical prowess. This season, the 38-year-old referee from Yorkshire, northern England, kept so close to the play that he appeared to be doing the assistant's job as well. He is also willing to use his strength to separate scuffling players.

But like many top referees, Webb has not escaped controversy or censure. At the 2008 European Championship, his decision to award co-host Austria a late penalty for a 1-1 draw prompted death threats in Poland. Webb insisted after the game that he was correct, but he regretted an offside decision by his assistant that ruled out a Poland goal.

The assistant's decision was shown to be incorrect and Webb paid for the error by not being selected to referee in the final stages of the tournament.

In last year's Confederations Cup in South Africa, Webb officiated the game between Brazil and Egypt. In the final minute, with the score 3-3 and a surprise draw looming, he appeared to miss an Egypt defender's handball on the goal line and appeared to point for a corner to Brazil. Moments later, he showed the defender a red card and awarded a penalty that gave Brazil victory.

Egypt claimed that a fourth official had relayed information to Webb to help him make the correct decision, which is not permitted.

Webb has taken charge of 15 Champions League matches since becoming an international referee in 2005 and has refereed six Champions League games this season, including the home leg of Inter's quarterfinal against CSKA Moscow and Bayern's goalless draw against Juventus.

His regular assistants, Michael Mullarkey and Darren Cann, will be his assistants in Madrid. The fourth official is Premier League referee Martin Atkinson.

Mullarkey and Cann will also be assisting Webb at the World Cup.

They showed the group stage matches on Fox Soccer Channel. The games were played in the afternoons on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
