NASCAR 80's driver James Neal - Former NASCAR driver pleads guilty police chase
Neal reached speeds as high as 140 mph on the Santa Ana (5) Freeway, Amormino said. The deputies, following department policy, gave up the chase because the infraction wasn’t serious enough and it would endanger other drivers, he added.

“Nobody will pursue someone at that speed,” Amormino said. “Even at 3 o’clock in the morning, there’s still traffic.”

The California Highway Patrol picked up the chase, but also lost sight of Neal, who was eventually caught because his engine blew up, forcing him to stop on the side of the road in San Diego County, near La Jolla, Amormino said.

Neal competed in NASCAR in the early 1980s, but never won a national race.
