Who would be the best 1 on 1 Basketball Player in a tournament?
Assuming they play 1 on 1 only. The first player to 11 or 21 points wins the game. 3 pointers would count as 1's. After a missed shot off the rim, the opposing player needs to take it back.

If they had this 1 on 1 tournament with say 32 or 64 players, with the winner going to the next round, like they have in the ncaa tournament, who would you guys say be the best player to win.

I'm thinking this. If your too short, it would be very hard for the player to get rebounds. If your too tall or big, you are going to have a tough time dribbling since these players rarely dribble besides in the paint.

But in the NBA, its all about teams and not players. But who do you guys think is the best 1 on 1 player in the league if they had this kind of tournament?

Lebron James would probably be the #1 choice. But who would be after him? Kobe would definitely be 2nd because he plays defense and does everything.

I'm just curious but who do you guys think would win 1 on 1 with a big size advantage. Say someone like Tim Duncan whos about 6'10 against Paul Pierce whos about 6'6.

Short guys can get rebounds because in a one on one game that is not that big of a deal. If it was 2 on 2 then you would have to worry about rebounding.

someone with height and athletic ability. Durant might do ok, but i'm not sure if he is strong enough to defend some real big guys down low

Yeah I think you'd have to have a player that could play tough post-up defense if he were to get matched up against a Dwight Howard, I don't think Kobe could stop Dwight....

so alot of the "obvious" players people pick would not have a shot.... Lebron might be stout enough to play relatively decent post up against some big guys

Kevin Garnett would have a chance (do believe we are talking about when players were at their best, and not the 09-10 season).

Lebron, because he's the type of guy who can back down most Pg's-SF's, and he can get the first step on PF's-Centers.

Undeniably the best player pound for pound 1 on 1 is Derrick Rose, then to throw everyone off, Larry Bird would be second, he would never have to play defense.

if we are talking all time, I'd throw in Wilt, Elgin Baylor, Oscar Robertson, Kareem (skyhooks all day), Magic, and George Gervin

I don't know offhand, I'd have to think on it. I played 3 years in high school and every season we had a 1 on 1 tourney, the guy that won it was never our best player. In fact 2 of the 3 seasons he wasn't even a starter. I know that may not indicate a pattern but I think it's more prevalent than you might imagine. Slower guys with average athletic skills yet are decent dribblers, have size, and a great shot are very effective in these games. They may not have the pure athletic skills to run full court but play 1/2 court much tougher. Just my opinon but Bill Laimbeer types can be rough outs, lot harder to beat than you think.

Edit - yeah Bird would be rough too.
