ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Hawks have decided not to renew the contract of head coach Mike Woodson, Channel 2 Action News sports director Zack Klein confirmed.
Executive VP/General Manager Rick Sund met with Coach Mike Woodson Friday morning and informed him that he will not be offered a new contract, the Hawks said in a statement to Channel 2. Woodson was not fired, as his current deal expires on June 30.
“We’re grateful for Mike’s contributions over the last six years and we want to wish him the very best,” said Sund.
Woodson coached the Hawks for six seasons. He entered his Hawks coaching career as a rookie head coach.
Under Woodson, the Hawks made back-to-back appearances in the eastern conference semi-finals but lost both times. After winning just 13 games in his first season, Woodson improved on that total every year closing with 53 regular season wins in 2009-10.
Sources close to the Hawks front office told Klein: "It's unacceptable going 7 games against Milwaukee and then losing by 25 points per game in the second round against the Magic."
Woodson went 11-18 in the post season, and according to the source, "Led the team as far as he could. A change had to be made."
