I never understood the hype about this guy to begin with... is it just because he is old? wow... he won a world series 100 years ago when there was 80 people in the field... how does that hold any weight today? how is he any better than anyone else playing holdem today?

No! It is because he is a winner. On this HSP show Gabe Kaplan said Doyle had a 16 or 18 TV game/session streaking going. He was a cash winner in that many straight TV sessions

Which was a record.

Doyle has been playing professional poker for over 50 years and has played in the biggest game in LV for the last 30+. One bluff that gets caught by some spastic player like lex means nothing. And the current crop of players is better than doyle but that does not mean he can't beat the game still. Fish are always fish.
