According to the Wiki article on the show, the ratings steadily rose up through the fourth season, then they nose-dived in the fifth. Shannon Doherty appears to be the only difference (seasons 1-4 only), but I doubt she had such a huge impact on the show, though she is a good actress.

In the second season. Dylan and Brenda don't make sense as a couple, or kinda-couple. He's very attractive and her personality isn't that attractive around him; the chemistry's weak. Dylan's also whiny... like all the time.
