Can't stand Slayer myself. A few years ago I bought 'reign in blood' because it was meant to be the daddy of all metal albums. All heavy metal bands were influenced by it etc etc. I bought it and thought it was the biggest pile of pooh.
On a side note, anyone hear that PETER STEELE died from TYPO NEGATIVE? I never bought any of their albums but a few of their songs were funny. Peter, I always thought was just having a laugh.

#5I love all genres (excluding only country and opera). Metal definitely has a big place in my collection, all types.
Best new metal band by a lot = Mastodon. If you haven't heard them, fukking listen.
But I listen to old and new. Here would be a list of my all-time fave metal bands, in no particular order..... I'll include everything, even if it's not exactly "metal":
Metallica
Mastodon
King's X
Megadeth
Ministry
Sevendust
Opeth
Unsane
The Melvins
Slayer
Cave-In
... many more
Then there's all the grunge or nu-metal stuff, which isn't technically metal, but many great bands:
Rage Against the Machine
Soundgarden
Alice in Chains,
etc.Comment -

#7I have been a metal fan for many years. Started back in the 80's being a big Quiet Riot fan and I went right from there liking all the hair-metal and Metallica that followed.Comment -

#10Originally posted by TheBeautifulGameFINALLY someone other than my brother and myself that like Mastodon. Absolutely brilliant. Brilliant taste in music my friend. (Exception: Slayer although they have their moments)
Regarding Slayer, at first I sort of felt like you -- that is, not enough attention to melody/ too messy, etc. -- but they won me over. For pure ferocity, you cannot beat the "Big Three" Slayer records from the late 80s/ early 90s -- Reign in Blood, South of Heaven, and Seasons in the Abyss. From a pure aggression/catharsis point-of-view, like you're just angry/bitter/frustrated and need a release, Slayer is it!Also, from a musician standpoint (I'm kind of one), there's some incredible stuff going on with time changes and dynamics, particularly on Reign in Blood.
On the topic of catharsis/release, I have to say that the BEST EVER combination of musicianship/melody with energy/power/aggression -- that is, the greatest formula ever for great music that also was an incredibly cathartic experience to listen to -- was created by Tom Morello (w/ help from Zack Delarocha) in Rage Against the Machine.
That sh-t never gets old! When I go running, and I'm listening to RATM, I swear I could just keep running for like 50 miles! And then I want to go throw Molotov cocktails through some third-world dictator's windows and free the oppressed!!! LOL. Power to the people!!!

#15Slayer
Pantara
Megadeth
Maiden
Strapping Young Lad and Devin Townsend
... and all the usual
+ all the European Melodeath (At the Gates, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Arch Enemy, Soilwork, etc..)
But Kataklysm is by far my favorite in the past few years. F'n brutal!!! Check out the new Hypocrisy too.
Blood Stained Child is another one. It's a Jap band that plays death metal mixed with Rave/house/whatever it's called. Pretty good.
Can't listen to any other type of music in my old age - and can't stand NYC radio because of it.Comment -

Can't listen to any other type of music in my old age - and can't stand NYC radio because of it.But I was very happy to welcome Metallica back last year with Death Magnetic, which was old-school and awesome.
Other excellent bands I forgot to mention earlier were Foo Fighters (yeah, they're not metal, but at times they're hard rock and the compositions are top-frigging-notch for radio-pop)... Korn (yeah, got a little annoying, but the de-tuned guitars and percussive bass, as well as the overall anger quotient, were very unique and cool for a while)... Jucifer (no one knows them, but very heavy guitar sound -- they run the sound through like a million amps... guitar sounds amazing)... Scheer (now-defunct Irish outfit... sorta like a much heavier Cranberries)..... I could go on and on.... LOVE music threads!!!Comment -
