I was just like you a couple of months ago wondering what about all these stories and whether they were hogwash or not. It's a lot of wasted mental energy trying to figure it out.

The trick is not to care if anyone is lying. Take the tidbits of wisdom scattered amid trash and mash that shit together to become knowledgeable yourself. Everything else is just noise but it is oddly entertaining so don't exclude it entirely.
