    1. Basketball (assuming Kobe or Lebron not playing).
    2. Baseball (assuming Pujols not playing).
    3. Hockey (assuming Crosby not playing).
    4. Football (assuming P.Manning not playing)
    5. Soccer (assuming Messi or Rooney not playing).

If you pick one state why do you think the absense of the player will move the line. I have not assumed any defense players in the scenario (like goalies, pitchers or defense players).

Would agree with this list for the most part. A basketball player like Kobe Bryant or Steve Nash being out is huge - sometimes more than most NFL qb's being out

        I'd say basketball.

Manning being out would have a huge impact on the line, but a defensive star or wr, ect, might not even impact the line.

I guess it also depends upon who the backup QB is? some teams take a STEEP drop off... other teams not so much.... I guess B-ball could be first.... because if you look at someone that is a great two way player in hoops.... like Michael was..... well you are losing out on offense and defense...

in football, the qb is only the leader of 35% of the game

IF you were to just pick a random starter basketball would probably be the most -

-- Obviously a QB in the NFL would make the biggest difference
            -- MLB pitcher
            -- NBA player
            -- Hockey goalie
            -- NFL RB
            -- Soccer player
            -- Hockey player
            -- Baseball player
            -- NFL player (non QB/RB)

I would say football, just because the line is a reflection of public perception then action, and NFL is the most publicly bet on sport. So a star QB or RB out would see the most movement

yeah I guess a starter in bases would be huge...

Imagine if instead of Halladay starting today.... Jamie Moyer had to move up to take his place... or worse a journeyman non prospect AAA starter that just so happened to be due to pitch today.....

line would go from -220 or -240 wherever it started to phils -120 real fast

Well the style the books set up for betting tells you the starting pitcher is most important as you have to list them or take action on a bet due to the possible disparity between a given starter and his replacement.

                        Football the most mvt.

                        Hockey Forward/Baseball Batter the least.

WRONG (a withdrawal will close market, no movement) Nice irony though...:P

If the position of the player is random, then it's basketball. One guy can and often does affect the outcome of the game.
If you target a specific position, then probably a star NFL QB.

biggest difference in what. Your doing apples to oranges. NHL is done in ML and basketball in points. This doesn't make sense, unless it's all hypothetical.
