What's the correct way of saying this?!?!?!?
Ok me and a bunch of friends were wasted last nite and one of my friends told me he had a heartburn. But he said I have heartburn. And I corrected him and said no bro it's I have A hearburn. Not I have heartburn. So this arguement went on for about an hour last nite. I have always said I have A heartburn. And I know the way I am saying it is rite. Becuz if I am wrong then if I told u I have a stomach ache I would say I have stomach ache. But that's not rite. U r supposed to say I have A stomach ache. Same goes with a headache. Am I rite for saying I have "A" heartburn?

you can say it that way gotem, you just sound like an idiot. It's not always about saying things the proper way, but the accepted way.

an ache is not a condition, like heartburn. You don't have a cancer, or a herpes, just like you don't have a heartburn

Grammatically it should be said with an 'a' because heartburn is a noun and needs an article to precede it.

But for whatever reason the majority of people have dropped it in every day conversation so your mate is 'right', too.

Why? Do you say I have a cancer? Heartburn is a condition like a disease & that's the accepted way of saying it in our everyday conversation. I'm not saying it's 100% grammatically correct, but were not in London talking to queen now either are we? If you don't wanna be looked at like you just dropped from outer space, It's I have heartburn.

Think of it like this: Why do people say "I have tonsilitis" or "I have bronchitis"? Both of them should have an 'a' in front of them as well.

We just butcher the English language endlessly. No wonder why people have such trouble learning it.

that's beside the point. All I wanted to know is which way is the rite way to say I have A heartburn. And I was rite.

It's an acronym so saying "I have AIDS" is acceptable.

In actual fact though you should be saying "I have the acquired immune deficiency syndrome".

you're grammatically correct, but not saying it the accepted way. I really dont give a fuk how you say it, but in my travels when I hear some say they have a heartburn I'll know its you, and I'll kick ya in the nuts. So just be careful sayin' it in public, you never know where I may be!

I say "I have heartburn" even though as the woman pointed out it's incorrect grammatically. I don't sweat grammar too much though as most people that seem to care about it are anal retentive in my experience. I usually try to make as many grammatical mistakes as possible in conversation to annoy them after the discovery.

He's not incorrect. That proves exactly what I was saying: We have butchered the English language.

Let me try this again: Do you say "I have A cold?" or "I have cold"?. How about "I have A toothache?" or "I have toothache"? Or "I have THE flu?" or "I have flu"? Those are all nouns, preceded by an article. As heartburn should be.

He's right. This is yet another example of why English is the hardest language to learn - we've screwed it up. And why we should take it easy on those who speak English as their 2nd, 3rd or 4th language. We don't even speak it properly or consistently ourselves.

The reason being exactly what The Profit said. This is a CONDITION. Just like stress. Indeed stress is a noun, but you do not say "I have a stress."
