Tourettes syndrome - why swearing?

I was watching a program about Tourettes the other day and one of the men they interviewed couldn't help shouting racist remarks when black people were around (essentially the 'n' word), yet he claimed not to be racist. What I don't understand is how come people suffering from this illness only seem to shout offensive or taboo language. Perhaps only the ones affected in this way are reported on. Are there others out there who feel compelled to shout "potato" or something? I'm really curious to know what about this illness makes people compelled to only shout taboo language? Or is this a misunderstanding on my part?

When tourette's sufferers shout out inappropriate things it is called coprolalia, and it is only one physical symptom of Tourette's.

Only around 15% of tourette's sufferers experience this, but it is the most publicized symptom, as TV shows etc often use it as a joke. People who do shout out these inappropriate things, simply do so because they are inappropriate and because they feel a VERY strong compulsion to say things which they feel pressured into not saying.

Do you ever remember being in a classroom or some situation where you are not allowed to laugh, but because you know you're not allowed to laugh, it just makes everything funnier and so you burst out laughing. It's like that, except the need to express something is much stronger.

Tourettes is definitely misunderstood.

There was a kid in my elementary/middle school with it and he would just make really loud ''squawking" sounds from time to time.

Kids was a fvckin weirdo, but I don't think it had anything to do with the Tourettes.

We were sitting in class one day and the teacher reminded us of an assignment due that Monday. The guy screams out "fukkin cvnt" at her and I start pissing myself laughing because I knew he wanted to go out to a football party that weekend but would now be stuck inside working on the paper instead.

End result: I'm tossed from the class for the rest of the year for 'disrespecting a fellow student with a disability'. Had to sit in the library instead and hang with Mr Boogerman the librarian. Piece of shit Tourettes guy.

The cursing is just part of my vocabulary , never thought there was a name for it. It could be I am angry all the time or maybe a disorder. It could just be a phobia too. As you are aware I have raccoon phobias where as I think raccoon always hiding in my room. It could also be ADD. I do not think I have DTA or CVB. I take some pills for calmess at times .
