With the impending graduation of guard Jon Scheyer, forward Lance Thomas, and center Brian Zoubek
, Duke knew it was going to lose three starters off of its 2010 national championship team - but it doesn't look as though the team is going to lose a fourth.
Kyle Singler
, the Devils' All-ACC small forward who scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds in Duke's 61-59 title-clinching win over Butler in Indianapolis, has decided to return to Durham for his senior season.
“I love being here at Duke and am excited about next year,” said Singler. “I had two great options in front of me, but I did not want to miss out on all of the great things to come in a senior season.”
Singler averaged 17.7 points and seven rebounds per game this past season and would likely have been chosen in the latter part of the first round in this year's NBA draft, one that is considered to be extremely deep.
“I am looking forward to coaching Kyle in his senior year and seeing him develop more as a player and as a leader,” said head coach Mike Krzyzewski
.
By staying an extra season Singler is likely to move into at least the late lottery of next year's draft, but he could very well face the prospect of trying to enter a professional league in the middle of a lockout.
The return of Singler means a likely preseason number one ranking for the 2010 national champions, as the Blue Devils also return guard Nolan Smith and key reserves Miles and Mason Plumlee
, bring in highly-touted prep point guard Kyrie Irving, and add the proficient shooting stroke of guard Seth Curry, who is now eligible after sitting out last season as a transfer.
