Can anyone help me with this Bank Question?
Has nothing to do with sports betting, just a straight up bank question. Not about identity theft either.

Here's the deal, I received a letter from a bank about 2 weeks ago, a bank which I thought I never had an account with. The envelope was addressed to my old address, but somehow got to me. It showed my last 50 transactions from a savings account I apparently had. Minimum balance had to always be $500, but the last 50 transactions were dated back to 2007 and all of them were the bank charging me $1.50/month for having under $500 in the account. My current balance there is around $40 now.

I actually went to the bank a couple of days ago and asked them about it. I don't ever remember opening an account there in 2007. She told me there was only the L50 transactions on the statement, not all of them. So I asked her when I opened the account there. She looks on the computer and tells me '1987'!!

How the fukk could I have opened an account in 1987 when I'm only 24 years old? It could have been my parents but they never told me about it. I asked both of them and neither say they opened it!

And does this mean the fukking bank has been taking $1.50 from me every month for the past 23 years??? and then sending the statements to my old address where I couldn't get them?? Is there any way to get back all those $1.50s? That's over $400! I need that shit bad!

      What about another relative?

      Grandparent? Aunt? Godparent?

My question would be----what happened to the interest? A 400-500 dollar savings account earning at a minimum of 2-3% should have grown enough to cover any monthly surcharges without eating into the balance.

this seems like a likely scenario, but i've had grandparents pass since then.

i'm wondering also about the interest, the only thing i can think of is

          1. that whoever opened the account may have foolishly deposited less than $500 initially, and the bank has been taking $1.50 since OR

          2. they deposited more than $500, but may have run into an inactivity fee or some other fee, which reduced the balance to less than $500, thus accruing a fee in itself.

BUT my main question is if you think I can get refunded any of the money. I'm more pissed that the bank has been silently taking $1.50 each mth for the past 23 years and I'm only notified now.

i know, it's a strange feeling. but the way i'm looking at it now is that if family put in any amount, they did it for me, not for the bank to take it away. it's turned into an honor thing now

They waited to take most all of the money before notifying you.

As far as your inquiry i dont think theyd reverse the fees.

I think you could make a really good case for youself.

I would visit the bank first chance you get....find out who opened the account for you, get a detailed description of all transactions---and then kindly remind them of the mistakes they have made---and in light of today's banking reputation-----a call to your attorney general's customer fraud prevention office may be needed.....

The money deposited was meant for you-----not the bank.

As far as the address goes, I don't think you can pin hat on hem. An account holder is liable for any change of address(es). They can't predict when & to where customers move.
Did you check to see if your ss# matches what one they have on file for the account?

that's my only concern here, but if only a grandparent knew about the account and has passed away, there's no way to communicate with the bank to change addresses.

also, how did i even receive this statement if the bank has no way of knowing where i live?

as for the ss#, i'm in canada so don't have one.

Why would the bank allow you to open an account with less money than the minimum required balance of $500.00? Perhaps that is a new feature that was added to the account and because of your changed address you were never made aware of it?

I don't think there is anything you can do here.
