With Monday being Patriots' Day, that can only mean two things: The Red Sox are playing an 11:05 a.m. ET game at Fenway Park, and the Boston Marathon is on tap. After exiting Fenway Park, fans will be able to take the short walk to Kenmore Square and see the marathoners run by.
It is one of those tradition-rich days that New Englanders always look forward to. As for the Red Sox, forgive them if they aren't paying much attention to the pomp and circumstance this time around.
They are in the throes of a four-game losing streak and would love to avoid being swept in four straight by the Tampa Bay Rays. The 4-8 Sox will take the field for the morning contest trailing the Yankees and Rays by five games in the American League East.
If anything, the early start means the Sox can get a quick crack at ending that losing streak.
"I don't care what time we start," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "I'd just like to play with a lead -- whether we're showing up at 6 in the morning or at midnight. I don't care. I just want to play with a lead."
Leads have been tough to come by of late for the Sox, but like the runners who will be going by Fenway on Monday, they do realize that a baseball season is much more of a marathon than a sprint.
"It's frustrating," Red Sox center fielder Mike Cameron said. "We just haven't been able to put anything together consistently. We have to find a way to come out of this, and basically we have to come out tomorrow early and try to get something going. We've been getting behind early a little bit here. First and foremost, we have to continue to grind."
Perhaps Patriots' Day can be a spark. It has been a charm for the Sox in recent years, as they've won their last six Patriots' Day games, and eight of the last nine dating back to 2001.
As for the standings, the Red Sox aren't going to give them much more than a cursory look in April.
"I'll tell you what, to be concerned with that is another thing. We just have to play better baseball," Cameron said. "All the other stuff will start to take care of itself. You start worrying about catching somebody or this, that and the other. ... We have to go out and play good baseball for 27 outs and try to get on the board and give these guys some leeway so they can do the things they're capable of doing."
Fortunately for the Red Sox, they have their hottest starting pitcher on the mound. John Lackey has cruised through his first two turns in a Boston uniform, going 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA.
He has pitched a night game and a day game thus far, so why not add a morning start to the mix?
The Rays will counter with righty Jeff Niemann.
"It's going to be weird, but I'm going to try and get up early and try and keep the hours the same," Niemann said. "Just have to get up, get out of bed, that's the biggest thing."
When was the last time Cameron played an 11 a.m. game?
"I don't think I've had one," Cameron said. "Except for playing a 10 o'clock game in [instructional league] or extended spring training."
But unlike those low-pressure games Cameron spoke of, the Red Sox are at a juncture where they badly need a win.
"By no means has this team played their best baseball, from pitching to defense to offense," Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek said. "I think this team will hit a lot better, we'll pitch the ball better, and obviously our defense will be a lot better."
All-time on Patriots' Day, the Red Sox are 66-48.
Patriots' Day is a holiday in Massachusetts and Maine that celebrates the anniversary of Paul Revere's ride and the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775.
For the 2010 Red Sox, the main meaning of the day is to get back on a winning track.
